Job summary

University Medical Center of Southern Nevada (UMC) is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to schedule, assign and monitor work and to sterilize and assemble surgical instruments and patient equipment. The role supports Nevada’s premier trauma center and Magnet-recognized hospital in Las Vegas.

Candidate must have a high school diploma and at least two years of sterile processing experience, plus CRCST or CBSPD certification at hire. Current UMC employee status is preferred.

Job Requirement

Education/Experience

Equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of experience as a sterile processing technician.

Licensing/Certification Requirements

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) certification at time of hire.

Knowledge Of:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements

Detergents and disinfectants; proper methods of cleaning various instruments; specialized surgical instrumentation; patient care equipment; principles and practices of infection control and sterilization; references for uncommonly used instruments; methods for disassembling instruments for washing; department and hospital safety practices and principles; patient rights; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.

Skill In:

Using ultrasonic, steam and pressure washer sterilizers; monitoring sterilization; operating autoclave, ETO sterilizer; assembling instrument trays and crash carts; triaging order of washing instruments; working effectively as a team member; handling biohazardous waste and anesthesia gas; reading results of biological tests before and after incubation; developing work schedules; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time, vision to read printed materials and VDT screens, hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
