Job summary

Ritchie Bros. is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to lead technical execution within Product Engineering, focusing on API-driven services and event-driven architectures.

You will collaborate with Product Management and engineering to deliver customer-centric capabilities, while driving lean development, performance improvements, and scalable solutions. You will mentor engineers, help drive hiring, stay current with industry trends, and contribute to RB Global’s technical strategy across

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience in software development with hands-on backend experience in Java or Go.
• 2+ years as a Staff engineer supporting at least 4 teams across a major business domain.
• Proficiency in Python, Java, or Go.
• Expertise in Spring Framework and building RESTful APIs.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven systems.
• Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases.
• Knowledge Graphs and ML/AI feature stores are a differentiator.
• Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP and Docker/Kubernetes.
• Frontend frameworks such as React or Angular for cross-functional collaboration.
• Experience with lean software development, pair programming, TDD, and trunk-based development.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools and approaches.
• Strong problem-solving and data-driven decision making.
• Excellent communication and ability to work in a remote team environment.
• Deep customer and product focus with passion for high-quality solutions.

Responsibilities

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Staff Software Engineer responsible for leading technical execution within Product Engineering teams. This role requires implementation of product capabilities with a strong focus on API‑driven services and event‑driven architecture. Collaborating closely with Product Management and Product Engineering to deliver customer and product‑centric capabilities while leveraging lean development practices. The engineer will proactively identify and resolve performance and scalability issues, cultivate a healthy and respectful environment, and drive innovation and excellence.

Responsibilities

Qualifications

• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or Go.
• Expertise in Spring Framework (e.g., Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring Security) and building RESTful APIs.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems, microservices architecture, and event‑driven systems.
• Strong experience with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) as well as highly scalable NoSQL datastores.
• Experience with Knowledge Graphs and ML/AI feature stores is a key differentiator.
• Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
• Familiarity with frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Angular) for collaboration with full‑stack teams.
• Experience with modern lean software development, pair programming, TDD, and trunk‑based development.
• Good awareness of CI and CD approaches and tools.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and a data‑driven approach to decision‑making.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a remote team environment.
