Job summary

Corning Inc. is seeking a Sr. Staff Engineer to set the technical direction for advanced measurement systems that leverage optical metrology and machine vision to support product inspection, quality control, process development, and manufacturing operations.

You will be the go-to technical authority, partnering across disciplines, and mentoring engineers while aligning measurement strategy with business needs. Domestic and international travel may be required up to 30%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or closely related field
• 12+ years optical metrology/machine vision with a bachelor’s degree (or 8+ with PhD) or 10+ with a master’s degree
• Proven expertise in optical metrology and/or machine vision with a track record of innovative tech
• Hands-on experience with optical systems, imaging hardware, and measurement instruments
• Strong programming skills in Python and/or C# for algorithms and integration
• Deep knowledge of machine vision algorithms (blob analysis, edge detection, morphology, feature extraction)
• Experience deploying ML techniques (CNNs) in production measurement systems
• Proficient in data analysis tools (Excel, MATLAB, Python) and HALCON/OpenCV/LabVIEW
• Ability to influence senior leaders and set technical direction for programs
• Up to 30% travel (domestic/international)
• Expertise in 3D measurement, structured light, lasers, and physical optics
• Experience with motion control and imaging platforms
• DOE and statistical process improvement familiarity
• Knowledge of HPC and database management
• History of supporting manufacturing with metrology at scale
• Authorships (reports, publications, patents) and mentoring experience

Role Purpose

As a Sr. Staff Engineer, you will set the technical direction for a portfolio of advanced measurement systems that leverage optical metrology and machine vision to support product inspection, quality control, process development, and manufacturing operations. You will be recognized as the go-to technical authority in this domain: anticipating how competitive and next-generation technologies impact Corning's programs, architecting solutions that others build upon, and partnering broadly across job functions, disciplines, and organizations - frequently engaging senior-level stakeholders - to align measurement strategy with business needs. You will also coach and mentor engineers and share knowledge broadly for the benefit of Corning.

Experiences/Education - Required

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field. Equivalent, recognized expertise gained through extensive relevant industry experience will also be considered.
• Minimum relevant experience in optical metrology and/or machine vision: 12+ years with a bachelor’s degree, 10+ years with a master’s degree, or 8+ years with a Ph.D.
• Recognized technical expertise in optical metrology and/or machine vision, with a track record of inventing, developing, or extending state-of-the‑art measurement technologies.
• Extensive hands‑on experience with optical systems, imaging hardware, and measurement instruments, including architecting complete, deployed measurement systems.
• Strong programming skills in Python and/or C# for algorithm development, data manipulation, and system integration.
• Deep knowledge of machine vision algorithms (blob analysis, edge detection, morphology, feature extraction, classification, etc.).
• Experience developing and deploying machine learning techniques, including training convolutional neural networks (CNNs), within production measurement systems
• Proficiency in data analysis using tools such as Excel, MATLAB, or Python; familiarity with software platforms including HALCON, OpenCV, or LabVIEW
• Demonstrated ability to influence senior technical and management leaders and to set technical direction for programs.
• Up to 10-30% domestic and international travel may be required, with trips ranging from one day to several weeks.
• Deep expertise in optical metrology techniques, including 3D measurement, structured light, lasers, and physical optics.
• Experience with motion control systems and imaging platforms.
• Knowledge of statistical analysis and process improvement methodologies such as design of experiments (DOE)
• Familiarity with database management and high-performance computing (HPC) systems.
• Track record of supporting manufacturing operations with metrology and inspection systems at scale.

The range for this position is $133,911.00-$184,128.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job‑related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
