Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a senior data engineering leader in Wisconsin to drive data platform strategy and delivery across multiple teams. You will own large, mission-critical systems, design end-to-end analytics, and mentor engineers to raise technical standards.

You will collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable, secure data solutions, while advancing best practices and cross-functional partnerships.

Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field.
10+ years in data engineering, architecture or distributed systems with 5+ years in leadership.
7+ years building scalable data platforms.
5+ years with Snowflake or BigQuery.
3+ years with dbt and modern ELT pipelines.
Hands-on with AWS services and Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker.
Knowledge of data governance, security controls and access management.
Strong observability, alerting, and incident management experience.
Excellent communication and mentoring abilities.

Job description

Lead data engineering projects at scale across multiple teams
Plan and deliver complex, multi-team or multi-system, long-term projects, including projects with external dependencies
Own large, mission-critical systems or complex team-level projects from design through implementation and operation
Research and brainstorm solutions to technical challenges with cross-functional teams
Design and build end-to-end analytics solutions for customer 360, finance, product, sales, and other business domains
Conduct critical R&D, proofs of concept, and vendor evaluations
Establish engineering best practices and mentor engineers on technical decisions
Foster technical excellence and continuous learning
Identify and implement internal process improvements, automate manual processes, and optimize data delivery
Partner with architects, engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to ensure data platforms are reliable, observable, secure, and governed

Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field
10+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or distributed systems, with at least 5 years in technical leadership roles
7+ years of data engineering experience building, working & maintaining scalable data platforms
5+ years of experience with cloud columnar databases such as Snowflake or Google BigQuery
3+ years of production experience with dbt and modern ELT pipelines
Extensive experience with Airflow, Snowflake, Fivetran, DBT, AWS, GitHub Actions, Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform
Hands-on experience with AWS services including S3, Glue, EMR, Athena, Snowpipe, Kubernetes, and Terraform
Understanding of data governance, security controls, and access management
Solid experience in observability, alerting, and incident management for data systems
Ability to work in a multifaceted, occasionally interrupt-driven environment with geographically spread teams and customers
Intermediate experience with Python, Go, Java, or Scala; primarily Python
Excellent communication skills
Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions
Proven ability to mentor staff and senior engineers
