Qualifications

  • Degree in accounting.
  • At least five years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in a public accounting or client-service environment.
  • Experience managing accounting work for multiple clients and QuickBooks company files.
  • Experience preparing individual and business income-tax returns.
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, financial statement preparation, and accounting close processes.
  • Experience providing financial reporting, analysis, or advisory support to business clients.
  • Experience with multistate payroll processing and reporting; multistate experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Matinee Accounting is a locally owned accounting firm helping small-business owners spend less time managing their books and more time doing what they love. Our team provides personalized accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, tax preparation, and financial advisory services tailored to each client’s needs.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Staff Accountant who combines strong technical accounting skills with the ability to advise clients, manage complex projects, prepare tax returns, and communicate effectively with business owners and colleagues.

The ideal candidate brings at least five years of relevant experience, enjoys working with multiple clients, and can confidently translate financial information into practical guidance for small-business owners. A CPA or EA designation is preferred.

Responsibilities
Client Accounting and Financial Reporting
  • Manage accounting and bookkeeping functions for multiple small-business clients and QuickBooks company files.
  • Review and maintain accurate general ledgers, accounting records, and supporting documentation.

Tax Preparation and Planning
  • Prepare individual income-tax returns and business income-tax returns for applicable entity types.
  • Gather and review client tax documents and reconcile tax information with underlying accounting records.
  • Prepare supporting tax schedules, workpapers, and related documentation.
  • Identify potential deductions, credits, and other tax considerations.
  • Assist with tax projections and planning discussions for individuals and business owners.
  • Coordinate with firm leadership on complex tax matters, technical questions, and client recommendations.
  • Monitor filing deadlines and manage multiple tax engagements through completion.
  • Assist with responses to tax notices and related client inquiries, as appropriate.
Payroll and Related Compliance
  • Process and review payroll for multiple clients on weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, and monthly schedules.
  • Prepare and review federal and multistate payroll-tax returns, deposits, and related reports.
  • Assist with multistate payroll registrations, unemployment reporting, and state-specific payroll requirements.
  • Prepare or review year-end payroll and information-reporting documents, including Forms W-2 and 1099.
  • Prepare and review applicable sales-tax and excise-tax filings.
  • Assist with workers’ compensation reporting, pay-as-you-go insurance submissions, and annual workers’ compensation audits.
Team Collaboration and Project Management
  • Coordinate effectively with firm leadership, Staff Accountants, and other team members.
  • Provide guidance and support to less-experienced staff on accounting, payroll, reporting, and client-service matters.
  • Review work prepared by other team members when assigned.
  • Organize and manage multiple client engagements, priorities, projects, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Anticipate scheduling conflicts and proactively communicate resource or timing needs.
  • Help improve internal processes, workflow efficiency, and consistency across client accounts.
  • Maintain high standards for accuracy, professionalism, confidentiality, and client service.
Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant designation or Enrolled Agent designation; CPA licensure is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Experience preparing tax returns for individuals, partnerships, limited liability companies, S corporations, and other business entities.
  • Experience with tax planning, tax projections, or responding to tax-related notices.
  • Experience reviewing staff work, mentoring team members, or coordinating accounting projects.
  • Experience with multistate payroll-tax filings, unemployment reporting, and payroll registrations.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow analysis, or custom financial reporting.
  • Familiarity with accounts payable, accounts receivable, sales-tax reporting, and workers’ compensation audits.
  • Experience working directly with small-business owners across multiple industries.
