Job Description

The Senior Staff Accountant supports the work of the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. This position is responsible for supporting the organization's financial operations through accurate accounting, financial reporting, grant and fund accounting, account reconciliations, and audit support. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of financial records and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, and applicable regulatory requirements. The Senior Staff Accountant works closely with the CFO, department leaders, auditors, and funding agencies to support the organization's mission through sound financial stewardship and accountability.

Qualifications

Education & Experience


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

  • CPA designation preferred.

  • Three to seven years of progressive accounting experience.

  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.

  • Experience with grant accounting government funding and restricted fund reporting.

  • Experience supporting annual audits and preparing financial statements.


Essential Functions


  • General Accounting

    • Prepare and record journal entries.

    • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.

    • Perform monthly bank, investment, and balance sheet account reconciliations.

    • Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.

    • Review financial transactions for accuracy and proper coding.

    • Ensure compliance with established accounting policies and procedures.



  • Financial Reporting

    • Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.

    • Assist in developing reports for management, grantors, and the Board of Directors.

    • Analyze account activity and investigate variances.

    • Support the preparation of budget-to-actual reporting.

    • Maintain documentation supporting financial transactions and reporting.



  • Fund and Grant Accounting

    • Track restricted and unrestricted funds.

    • Monitor grant expenditures and ensure compliance with grant agreements.

    • Assist in preparing grant budgets, reimbursement requests, and financial reports.

    • Maintain schedules supporting grant revenue recognition and expenditures.

    • Coordinate with program managers to ensure accurate allocation of expenses.



  • Accounts Payable and Receivable Oversight

    • Review accounts payable transactions for accuracy and proper approval.

    • Monitor accounts receivable balances and collections.

    • Assist with cash receipts processing and donor contribution reconciliation.

    • Ensure timely recording of financial transactions.



  • Audit and Compliance

    • Prepare audit schedules, workpapers, and supporting documentation.

    • Assist with annual external audits and financial statement preparation.

    • Support preparation of Form 990 schedules and related filings.

    • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and internal controls.

    • Identify and recommend process improvements to strengthen controls and efficiency.



  • Budgeting and Analysis

    • Assist with annual budget preparation and forecasting processes.

    • Monitor departmental spending and budget variances.

    • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to management.

    • Support cash flow reporting and forecasting activities.



  • Systems and Process Improvement

    • Maintain financial data within accounting and ERP systems.

    • Assist in system implementations, upgrades, and testing.

    • Recommend process improvements to increase efficiency and reporting accuracy.

    • Develop and maintain accounting procedures and documentation.

Compensation & Benefits

The YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth offers a competitive salary and benefits package for selected candidates.


The yearly salary range for this position is $85,000 - $105,000 and will be commensurate with the selected candidate's experience.
