Qualifications

The Utilities & Energy Operations department is responsible for safe, compliant, reliable, and cost‑effective operation of Powerhouse, Central Plants and Water Facilities. The Utility & Energy Operations (UEO) department is responsible for the operations of two combined cycle heat and power plants, five balance of plant boilers, and seven distributed campus chiller plants. The power plant has a generating capacity of 60 MW. The boilers have a total steam generating capacity over a 1,000,000 lbs. per hour. The campus chillers plants have a combined capacity of 40,000 Tons consisting of a combination of steam and electric chillers. Utility & Energy Operations is responsible for providing West Point campus utilities 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Our Company has identified aggressive climate goals with the UEO department responsible for managing the largest contributors to the Company’s scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions.


Position Description

The Sr Specialist, Sustainability provides support to optimize the operations of systems and equipment to achieve energy, emissions, and cost savings. This role works with building maintenance teams as well as utility operations team members to implement effective and innovative energy conservation measures for both supply and demand‑side management strategies. The Sr Specialist, Sustainability ensures energy and emissions data is accurate across various tracking platforms, monitors usage trends and ensures action is taken to address discrepancies. The Sr Specialist, Sustainability supports project work on site as a subject matter expert in sustainability, providing guidance and assuring project teams adhere to our Company's sustainability guidelines and LEED building practices.


Responsibilities


  • Works to implement effective and innovative energy conservation measures in both supply and demand‑side management strategies in buildings and utility generation facilities.

  • Coordinates with building maintenance and engineering teams to optimize the operations and energy use of energy systems and equipment.

  • Works with team members to analyze systems and equipment to determine optimum operating conditions and diagnose issues impacting energy consumption; develops and recommends strategies to maximize operating efficiency.

  • Educates employees on sustainability practices and initiatives.

  • Performs outreach and engagement to foster a sustainability mindset.

  • Reviews utility billing and meter data to identify opportunities for sustainability improvements.

  • Performs physical and virtual energy audits and tracks opportunities identified to completion.

  • Researches, tests, and summarizes benefits of energy efficiency and renewable energy project concepts.

  • Monitors progress of sustainability initiatives and adjusts strategies as needed.

  • Acts as data steward for sustainability KPIs. Monitors KPI effectiveness.

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining professional networks, and participating in professional organizations.

  • Supports project work on site as a subject matter expert in sustainability, providing guidance and assuring project teams adhere to our Company's sustainability guidelines such as PA-111, STD-D123 and LEED building practices.

  • Act as the subject matter expert for sustainability and shop floor digital tools: field questions, troubleshoots user issues, and drives adoption across UEO, supporting colleagues with a wide range of technical comfort levels and skills.

  • Supports implementation of sustainability related digital tools (Clockworks, etc.).

  • Learns and supports UEO financial tracking activities including monthly expense accrual activities, quarterly budget updates, bi‑weekly LT dashboard reviews, and monthly capital project updates in the PM Tool.


Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience


  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable engineering or environmental field or other relevant degree from an appropriately accredited institution.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience or equivalent in relevant area.

  • Demonstrated track record of delivering energy conservation measures.

  • Experience in performing engagement and outreach activities related to sustainability.

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and principles and experience in one or more of the following engineering fields: chemical, mechanical, electrical, environmental, civil.

  • Experience interpreting engineering documents, evaluating construction plans, and using data to monitor and control mechanical systems.

  • Ability to perform technical analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience with development and deployment of digital tools and systems.

  • Familiarity with ASHRAE standards.

  • Ability to manage time independently and meet schedules and deadlines for projects.

  • Ability to identify high‑impact energy conservation measures and manage energy efficiency projects.


Preferred Skills And Experience


  • 5+ years of experience.

  • Experience with building systems and equipment, including implementing energy efficiency measures and optimizing equipment use.

  • Experience with building BAS systems and equipment.

  • Experience managing multiple simultaneous sustainability projects.

  • Ability to communicate technical and nontechnical information to various stakeholders.

  • Professional certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).


Advanced degree in an applicable environmental or engineering field or other relevant degree from an appropriately accredited institution.

The salary range for this role is


$117,000.00 - $184,200.00


This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, government requirements, and business or organizational needs.


The successful candidate will be eligible for annual bonus and long‑term incentive, if applicable.
