Job description

At Bristol Myers Squibb, our employees often ask, “Who are you working for?”—a question that fuels collaboration, accountability, and urgency in our work. Our purpose-driven culture inspires us to discover, develop, and deliver innovative medicines to prevail over serious diseases. We offer uniquely interesting and meaningful work, opportunities for growth, and a supportive environment that values inclusion, wellbeing, flexibility, and comprehensive benefits. This is work that transforms the lives of patients, and the careers of those who do it.

The primary focus of this role is to support Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) as the Senior Specialist, Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) for the Seattle sites within the Department of Environmental, Occupational Health, Safety and Sustainability (EOHSS).

This role is highly field-focused, engaging employees where they work to promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with company and regulatory requirements. The individual will be responsible for managing the site Contractor Safety Program and other safety programs, delivering training, conducting risk assessments, supporting compliance activities, self‑assessments, and audits, and driving continuous improvement of EOHSS processes and workflows.

As a key EOHSS resource for the Seattle sites, the Senior Specialist will collaborate across multiple departments to align corporate and local policies, foster a proactive and integrated EOHSS culture, lead safety initiatives, and support environmental, safety, and sustainability objectives throughout site operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental, health, safety, occupational health, medical surveillance, and sustainability regulations, codes, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve EHS programs, procedures, and management system elements to support compliance and operational excellence.
  • Serve as the site Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Industrial Hygiene, Chemical Hygiene, Biosafety, Bloodborne Pathogens, Contractor Safety, General Safety, and other assigned EHS programs.
  • Manage chemical, biological, and related EHS inventories, databases, records, and reporting systems to ensure accuracy, regulatory compliance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Lead and administer biosafety programs across multiple sites, including risk assessments, biological safety reviews, inspections, training, and support of Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) activities.
  • Coordinate and deliver EHS training programs, including new hire orientation, laboratory safety, biological safety, contractor safety, regulatory compliance training, and refresher courses. Maintain accurate training records and support training compliance initiatives.
  • Promote a positive safety culture by partnering with employees, contractors, researchers, facilities personnel, and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure compliance with EHS requirements and foster safe work practices.
  • Lead and support EHS inspections, audits, self‑assessments, GEMBAs, and compliance reviews. Track findings, corrective actions, and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Conduct and manage incident, injury, near‑miss, and contractor‑related investigations, including root cause analysis, corrective actions, and reporting requirements.
  • Manage occupational health program records and processes, including medical surveillance, reproductive health and family planning, vaccinations, respiratory protection, risk assessments, and incident follow‑up, in coordination with occupational health professionals.
  • Administer and utilize EOHSS and related management system platforms for investigations, inspections, compliance management, occupational safety, corrective actions, training, and reporting.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage EHS documentation systems, SharePoint sites, databases, forms, procedures, SOPs, inspections, action items, communications, and management system records in alignment with quality and EHS requirements.
  • Coordinate contractor safety and high‑hazard work programs, including permit compliance, contractor oversight, field audits, and performance monitoring.
  • Generate, maintain, analyze, and distribute EHS metrics, reports, records, and performance data as assigned.
  • Support site financial and administrative processes, including purchase orders, check requests, invoices, expense tracking, meeting coordination, and related documentation.
  • Serve as a key EHS contact for internal customers, researchers, facilities, management, contractors, and cross‑functional teams, providing technical guidance and responsive support.
  • Participate in EOHSS operational reviews, tier meetings, committees, teams, audits, and strategic initiatives to support site and organizational objectives.
  • Drive continuous improvement by challenging the status quo, identifying process enhancements, and implementing innovative solutions that improve efficiency, compliance, and effectiveness.
  • Ensure timely and effective resolution of EHS issues, escalating concerns, resource constraints, or emerging risks to appropriate leadership as necessary.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related scientific discipline.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of directly related EHS experience, preferably within biopharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, manufacturing, research, or laboratory environments.
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, EPA, state regulatory agencies).
  • Hands‑on laboratory experience working with hazardous chemicals and laboratory operations is preferred.
  • Experience using EHS management systems, incident tracking, learning management, or compliance databases (e.g., Enablon, Intelex, SuccessFactors, or similar platforms).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment while exercising sound judgment, initiative, and strategic problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision‑making capabilities with the ability to identify practical solutions to complex EHS challenges.
  • Experience handling confidential information and sensitive matters with professionalism, discretion, and integrity.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship‑building skills, with a proven ability to collaborate effectively across all organizational levels, including site leadership, cross‑functional teams, and corporate EHS stakeholders.
  • Self‑motivated and adaptable, with a continuous improvement mindset and a commitment to operational excellence and safety culture.
