Job summary

Blue Origin LLC is hiring a senior communications engineer to design and validate in-space communication systems. You will decompose high-level requirements to subsystems, align with engineering practices across projects, and coordinate with test facilities to ensure capabilities meet definitions.

The role includes developing analyses and simulations (link budgets, coverage), authoring safety artifacts, and mentoring early career engineers in a fast-paced aerospace environment in Washington

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required.
• 10+ years in communication systems or RF testing required.
• Strong knowledge of RF components (SSPA, LNAs, Transceivers, antennas, filters).
• Solid understanding of digital modulation (QPSK, OQPSK, UQPSK, spread spectrum).
• Experience delivering comms systems for spacecraft, with radiation effects considerations.
• Experience integrating comms systems into larger systems and interfaces (RS-422, Ethernet, SpaceWire, HDLC).
• Experience developing RF simulations (link budgets, coverage analyses, LOS) using HFSS, STK, MATLAB, Python.

Responsibilities

• Develop communication system designs for in-space architectures.
• Decompose requirements to the Communications Subsystems.
• Support Lunar Permanence System engineering practices alignment.
• Manage system and lower-level requirements, including change control and audits.
• Develop ConOps and verification/validation activity definitions.
• Track analyses and simulations for communications subsystems (link, coverage, performance).
• Coordinate with Integration & Test for facilities capabilities and test readiness.
• Oversee V&V activities and travel to test facilities if needed.
• Define vehicle-level interfaces between systems and components.
• Contribute to safety artifacts such as hazard assessments and mitigations.
• Mentor early career systems engineers.
