Job summary

University of Michigan’s Space Physics Research Laboratory (SPRL) seeks a Systems Engineer to design, build, test, and operate space systems and instruments for current and future missions. The SE will manage hardware, software, equipment, facilities, and processes across projects, ensuring subsystems meet performance parameters.

The role involves multi-disciplinary collaboration, occasional hybrid/remote work, and presenting at design reviews to key stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor Degree in Engineering or equivalent.
• Master's Degree in Space Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent.
• 1–3 years of systems engineering with NASA, DoD, or similar satellite/rocket projects.
• 3–5 years of systems engineering with NASA, DoD, or similar satellite/rocket projects.
• Experience with standard engineering tools (Requirements Management Tools, CAD, electrical design).
• Knowledge of electronics/materials for space environments, esp. small satellites.

Responsibilities

• Develop system architecture with block diagrams and configuration.
• Create verification and validation plans for instruments and subsystems.
• Develop and maintain instrument and subsystem requirements.
• Coordinate with project management and subsystem leads.
• Report on systems engineering development and progress.
• Monitor system metrics: mass, power, volume, performance characteristics.
• Present design reviews and briefings to stakeholders.
• Ensure requirements and priorities are communicated to management.
