Job summary
SpaceX’s Starshield program seeks a Sr. Space Lasers Engineer to design, validate and operate free-space optical systems for laser communications in space environments.
You will influence system-level architecture, perform testing, and collaborate with software and manufacturing teams to ensure producible designs. The role requires a strong background in optics and lasers, 5+ years in relevant labs, and experience with Python/C++ and Zemax; a clearance is a plus and willingness to work extended
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in optical engineering, physics, or related STEM field.
- 5+ years in optics, photonics, laser tech, or related lab experience.
- 3+ years of coding in C++, MATLAB, or Python.
Responsibilities
- Apply optics and photonics knowledge to optical system development, including design, analysis, and validation.
- Lead optical architecture definition through internal trade studies and risk reduction testing.
- Participate in verification testing, including environmental qualification, performance characterization, and reliability testing.
- Define and lead field testing of optical experiments and laser communication systems.
- Review test data and lead anomaly investigation and resolution.
