Job description

At RTX, the world's largest aerospace and defense company, 185,000 great minds are united by purpose and inspired to make a difference solving the world’s most complex problems. With our three market leading businesses, world‑class operations and investments in research and development, we offer capabilities and opportunity no one else can. Together, we push the boundaries of known science and find new ways to connect and protect our world.

Collins Aerospace is a leader in technologically advanced, intelligent solutions that help redefine the aerospace and defense industry. With a comprehensive portfolio and deep technical expertise, we help customers meet the demands of the global market.

Join us and help shape the future of aerospace and defense. Collins Aerospace, an RTX company, is a leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the global aerospace and defense industry.

The Platform Software Department within Mission Systems’ Resilient Connectivity Products (RCP) portfolio is looking for a Senior Software Engineering Manager who is passionate about serving and developing people, solving hard technical problems, and building high‑performing teams. This is not a role where leadership happens from the sidelines. You will stay connected to the engineering, work alongside your team, remove barriers, provide technical and organizational direction, and create an environment where engineers can do their best work.

What You Will Do
  • Lead by serving the team.
  • Build trust, listen, remove obstacles, provide clarity, and create an environment where engineers feel empowered to take ownership and succeed.
  • Develop great engineers and future leaders.
  • Coach team members, provide meaningful feedback, recognize strong performance, support career development, and help people find opportunities that challenge and grow them.
  • Stay connected to the technology.
  • Participate in the design, development, coding, integration, testing, and debugging of embedded software while helping the team work through its toughest technical challenges.
  • Build and sustain a high‑performing team.
  • Recruit great talent, strengthen team capabilities, foster a welcoming and collaborative culture, and ensure people understand how their work contributes to the mission.
  • Help teams establish clear priorities, anticipate risks, remove roadblocks, and deliver predictable program execution while continuously looking for ways to improve.
  • Shape the work ahead.
  • Lead and contribute to engineering bids, proposals, estimates, staffing plans, and technical strategies that position our teams for future success.
  • Collaborate across programs and engineering teams to share talent, technology, lessons learned, and best practices rather than optimizing only for your immediate team.
  • Build strong partnerships.
  • Develop trusted relationships across RCP Engineering, Value Stream Leadership, program teams, and government customers while maintaining transparency around priorities, progress, risks, and opportunities.
  • Champion engineering excellence.
  • Ensure the team meets Collins Aerospace development processes and standard work expectations while challenging existing approaches when there is an opportunity to make them better.
Qualifications You Must Have
  • Ability to obtain an active US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.
  • Cost account management (EVMS) and schedule management.
  • Experience leading cross-functional technical teams in software development/integration/test.
  • Working knowledge of embedded software development and the use of the Rust and Python programming language (or other memory safe languages).
  • A proven ability to guide and lead software development processes.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies. Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience.
Qualifications We Prefer
  • Familiarity with software defined radios architectures, networking communications waveforms, experience with bid narrative write‑ups, earned value reporting, configuration management tools, ALM tool suite, SEER‑SEM estimation modeling tool, and wireless technologies.
  • Direct involvement in Agile methodologies, serving as a Product Owner, Scrum Master, or Release Train Engineer, with demonstrated success in managing Agile ceremonies, sprint planning, backlog grooming, and cross-team coordination.
  • High‑level understanding of systems, cryptographic, and FPGA engineering, as well as hardware development.
