Job summary

Nuro in California is seeking an experienced backend engineer to architect and operate scalable distributed systems powering ride planning and vehicle matching. You will design robust APIs, own features end-to-end, and mentor teammates while delivering reliable performance on real-time data streams.

Proficiency in Go and Google Cloud Platform, plus hands-on experience with CloudSQL/BigQuery/Redis, will position you to influence critical parts of our autonomous driving platform.

About The Team

A rider taps "request ride" and within seconds, an autonomous vehicle is matched, dispatched, and on its way. The On-Road Experience team owns the systems that make that moment happen. The On-road Experience team builds the real-time distributed system behind Nuro's ride-hailing product. This is foundational infrastructure where correctness and performance have consequences on a real road.

About The Role

What You'll Own

• 4+ years of backend engineering experience with strong Go proficiency
• Experience designing and operating distributed systems where reliability isn't optional
• End-to-end product ownership — from requirements through launch and iteration
• Solid hands-on experience with GCP (CloudSQL, BigQuery, Redis, or equivalent)
• A track record of technical leadership: setting the bar, mentoring others, making hard trade-offs

Great to have:

• dispatch, fleet, location, or delivery/ride platform experience. Even better if you've built systems where the physical world is the end user.

• Domain Expertise: Experience with backend services related to vehicles, location, dispatch, inventory, or order/ride/delivery.
• Product and Business Acumen: A keen interest in the "why" in addition to the "how." You are eager to understand and contribute to product and business requirements, capable of identifying high-impact projects from a list of potential initiatives.

Compensation

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $160,360 and $240,540 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
