Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an experienced software engineer to design and operate fraud-focused data pipelines and services in a production environment. You will collaborate with Data Scientists, ML Engineers, and cross-functional teams to surface features for models and embed model decisions into live systems.

The role emphasizes building scalable, fault-tolerant architectures and developing internal tools for Trust & Safety, Support, and Finance to investigate and act on fraud signals.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience building and operating distributed systems or backend services in production.
  • Experience designing and building data or event pipelines, such as Kafka, Pub/Sub, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, service security, and API standards such as OpenAPI, OAuth, or JWT.
  • Working knowledge of SQL, data modeling, and relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Comfort owning ambiguous, 0-to-1 problems with limited existing infrastructure or precedent.
  • Strong troubleshooting, cross-functional communication, and project ownership skills.
  • Experience in fraud, risk, trust & safety, or payments engineering.
  • Familiarity with ML serving and feature engineering concepts.
  • Experience with billing, subscriptions, or other financial/transactional systems.
  • Experience building internal tools or dashboards for non-engineering stakeholders.
  • This position may require authorization to receive software or technology controlled under U.S. export laws without sponsorship for an export license

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate services and pipelines ingesting fraud-relevant events from billing, signup, support, and other internal systems.
  • Partner with Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers to expose event data and contextual features for models and integrate model decisions into pipelines and tools.
  • Create internal tools and workflows for Trust & Safety, Support, and Finance analysts to investigate flagged accounts and events and take action.
  • Drive initiatives from problem definition through design, implementation, rollout, and operation with minimal oversight.
  • Build fault-tolerant systems handling retries, failures, and high event volumes without silently dropping or duplicating fraud signals.
  • Maintain operational health and address root causes of recurring issues.
  • Establish architecture patterns, tooling choices, and engineering standards as an early team engineer.
  • Collaborate with Trust & Safety, Data Science, Billing/Fintech, Support, and Product teams to translate fraud vectors into engineering requirements.
