Job description

About A1M

A1M Solutions is a woman-owned small business driven by the aspiration to provide value to our customers, employees, partners, and community while remaining aligned to our guiding principles of foundational values, deliberate focus, and empathetic connection.

A1M’s mission is to preserve and improve government healthcare programs that are lifelines for underserved people in the United States, including people in poverty, elderly people, members of ethnic and racial minorities, immigrants, and refugees. We look for projects with nation-wide impact at the intersection of policy, data, and user experience design.

Besides building useful and usable digital services, A1M helps teams improve their agile, user-centered design practices – or helps them get started. Our goal is not just to build sustainable public services, but also to leave our teaming partners and customers more skilled and more confident in the future.

Technology Delivery at A1M

A1M Technology Delivery Practice staff meet client and user needs by planning, building, and maintaining solutions that involve programming and scripting. Our practice includes product managers, software engineers, and data analysts. We analyze government client challenges and identify how best to help the client meet their goals, which may involve custom code, low code, and no code approaches.

Technology Delivery Practice staff work in cross-functional, cross-organizational teams with designers and policy subject matter experts. We approach challenges with flexibility, patience, thoughtful communication, and solid best practices in agile product management and development. We value high-trust teams.

About this Role

As a Senior Frontend Software Engineer, you work with minimal guidance to design, build, and evolve complex, accessible, performant, and maintainable user-facing applications. You apply deep expertise in frontend architecture and modern web development to translate user needs, design systems, and product requirements into reliable, intuitive digital experiences.

You collaborate with the team to break down ambiguous or complex goals into concrete, feasible steps that align with and inform wider system strategy. Senior engineers do not always have formal management or lead responsibilities, but an interest in teaching and coaching is essential.

Skills and Responsibilities
Technical capabilities
  • - Design, build, and maintain complex, accessible, performant, and maintainable frontend applications using modern web technologies and frameworks.
  • - Own frontend components and applications throughout their lifecycle, from technical design and implementation through testing, deployment, monitoring, and production support.
  • - Build reusable UI components and shared frontend patterns that promote consistency, maintainability, and efficient delivery across applications.
  • - Contribute to the adoption, implementation, and evolution of design systems, including shared components, design tokens, documentation, and consistent interaction patterns across applications.
  • - Champion and validate accessibility, including semantic HTML, keyboard navigation, assistive technology compatibility, alignment with applicable accessibility standards, multimodal testing and collaboration with designers and users to identify and resolve barriers.
  • - Establish and improve frontend development workflows, including build tooling, dependency management, CI/CD integration, and release practices.
  • - Integrate frontend applications with APIs and backend services, handling asynchronous data, loading and error states, validation, authentication flows, and appropriate client-side state management.
  • - Apply secure frontend development practices, including safe rendering of untrusted content, appropriate handling of authentication and session flows, protection against common browser-based vulnerabilities, and minimizing exposure of sensitive information in client-side code, storage, and telemetry.
  • - Define and evolve frontend architecture, including component boundaries, application structure, routing, state management, data fetching, and client-side error handling.
  • - Drive improvements in frontend code quality, testing practices, and development standards across the team
  • - Use browser developer tools, automated checks, logging, and monitoring to diagnose issues, investigate production defects, and improve application reliability.
  • - Mentor engineers, review code and technical designs, and contribute to team growth and technical direction
  • - Collaborate to break down ambiguous or complex goals into concrete, feasible steps and communicate frontend risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs to relevant stakeholders.
  • - Seek out and share new technologies and skills that meaningfully improve frontend development and support project goals
  • - Collaborate with designers, product managers, backend engineers, and subject matter experts to clarify requirements, identify technical tradeoffs, and deliver cohesive user experiences

  • - Proactively recognize risks and conflicts within the team and clients, help identify approaches, and take action – manage up (understanding timing, context and other pressures, etc.) and elevate when appropriate.
  • - Evaluate your own skills and deliverables and take action based on self-assessment. This might include proactively reaching out to other team members for help upskilling in skill gap areas.
Cross-domain understanding
  • - Initiate and drive projects that require working with multiple people in other disciplines and practices on challenging problems.
