Job summary

Sofar Ocean seeks a Senior Software Engineer to work with U.S. Navy Fleet users, adapting our marine weather technology for government workflows and systems. Clearance or recent clearance is required.

This hybrid role is based in Norfolk, VA or San Diego, CA, with frequent onsite work (2–3 days/week) near Fleet Weather Center users. You will build user-facing software and integrate with government data and systems.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Experience with TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, or similar languages.
• Experience integrating software with APIs, data sources, backend services, or external systems.
• Strong visual and product sense, with the ability to design clear, intuitive user interfaces from observed workflows.
• Ability to translate operational workflows and domain concepts into practical application behavior.
• Ability to quickly understand unfamiliar systems, interfaces, data formats, workflows, and codebases.

Responsibilities

• Understand Fleet Weather Center users and their workflows to improve routing and voyage-planning tools.
• Translate observed workflows into software and UI improvements.
• Improve ship selection, voyage planning, route review, and route comparison features.
• Develop clear presentation of routes, weather, vessels, voyages, and related data.
• Prototype workflow concepts with users and iterate based on feedback.
• Integrate Sofar data with Government systems and external APIs.
