Job summary

Coinbase is seeking a Data Engineering Platform Engineer on the Data Platform team. You will build abstractions, SDKs, and self-service apps that empower analysts, data scientists, and engineers to deploy and manage thousands of data pipelines with robust security and observability.

You will work across data storage, processing, and tooling, partnering with stakeholders to design scalable data models and APIs.

Qualifications

• 7+ years backend data engineering experience.
• Strong Python or Java backend development.
• Fluent SQL for ETL/ELT and analytics.
• Hands-on with Snowflake or Databricks.
• Experience with data systems or pipelines.
• Knowledge of Git, Linux, and Docker.
• Experience with Airflow, BI, and AI tools.

Responsibilities

• Build clean software abstractions and modular, reusable components that support thousands of pipelines as we scale.
• Build and maintain data integration and processing SDKs used by data teams and internal services across Coinbase.
• Design and build self-service applications for analysts and data scientists to manage pipelines with minimal platform knowledge.
• Develop tooling for data security and observability: access controls, data quality tracking, cataloging and lineage, usage auditing.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with upstream teams to optimize data APIs and provide well-documented data models and metrics.
• Translate functional requests from data teams into scalable, reusable patterns.

The Data Platform team builds and operates the systems that centralize all of Coinbase's internal and third-party data, making it easy for teams across the company to access, process, and transform that data for analytics, machine learning, and powering end-user experiences. As an engineer on the team you'll contribute across the full spectrum of our systems, from foundational processing and storage to scalable pipelines to the frameworks, tools, and internal applications that make data easily and efficiently available.

This role sits between our platform and the analysts, data scientists, and data engineers who use it every day. You'll build the SDKs, self-service apps, and abstractions that let thousands of pipelines and analyses run without those users needing to understand the plumbing underneath.

What you'll do:

• Build clean software abstractions and modular, reusable components that let us support thousands of pipelines and beyond as we scale.
• Build and maintain data integration and processing SDKs used by data teams and internal services across Coinbase.
• Design and build self-service applications that let analysts and data scientists create, manage, and troubleshoot their own pipelines without deep platform knowledge.
• Build tooling for data security and observability: access controls across storage and access layers, data quality tracking, dataset cataloging and lineage, usage auditing.
• Work cross-functionally: consult upstream teams on structuring their databases to expose good data APIs, and give downstream data scientists well-designed, well-documented data models and metrics.
• Convert functional requests from data analysts, ML, and security & compliance into reusable, scalable patterns.

Required Skills and Experience:

• 7+ years experience
• Strong Python or Java backend development skills.
• Fluent SQL for ETL/ELT, data quality, and analysis.
• Hands-on experience with Snowflake, Databricks, or similar.
• General experience working with data systems or data pipelines.
• Working knowledge of git, Linux, and Docker.

Annual base salary range (excluding equity and bonus):: $186,065 USD - $218,900 USD
