Job summary

CharterUP is seeking a Senior Software Engineer - Backend to join our Pricing team and build the backend systems that power pricing across our two-sided marketplace. You’ll design and evolve APIs and services that support dynamic pricing, auctions, and supply-demand balancing, working closely with Engineering, Product, and Data Science partners.

Location: Austin, TX (Hybrid: Monday, Wednesday, Friday in-office). Salary: $140,000 – $165,000 USD.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend software engineering experience.
• Strong experience with JVM languages, especially Java.
• Experience with marketplace, pricing, or matching systems is a plus.
• Excellent API design and distributed systems knowledge.
• Experience with AWS and cloud infrastructure.

About the Role

CharterUP is seeking a Senior Software Engineer - Backend to join our Pricing team and build the backend systems that power pricing across our two-sided marketplace. You’ll design and evolve APIs and services that support dynamic pricing, auctions, and supply-demand balancing, working closely with Engineering, Product, and Data Science partners.

Our Pricing team is focused on maximizing marketplace revenue and customer trust by delivering competitive, intelligent pricing that balances margin, conversion, and long-term customer relationships. This is a highly collaborative and evolving space where engineers play an active role in shaping how pricing strategies translate into reliable, scalable systems.

Title: Senior Software Engineer - Backend

Reports to: Engineering Manager

Location: Austin, TX (Hybrid: Monday, Wednesday, Friday in-office).

What You’ll Do

• Design, build, and evolve scalable backend services and APIs that power CharterUP’s pricing systems
• Architect APIs and service integrations supporting dynamic pricing, auctions, supply-demand balancing, and downstream marketplace workflows
• Translate complex pricing strategies and business rules into reliable, maintainable systems while owning them end to end
• Build backend systems that enable pricing experimentation, partnering with Product and Data Science to test new strategies and bring insights into production
• Design for reliability, scalability, and performance across pricing and connected marketplace services, including matching, availability, and transactions
• Contribute to technical direction and system architecture as pricing strategies evolve, using modern development practices and AI-assisted tools

What You’ll Bring

• 5+ years of experience as a backend software engineer, with strong experience in JVM-based languages, particularly Java, and building scalable backend services and APIs
• Experience in marketplace, pricing, auction, matching, or other complex decisioning systems is a strong plus
• Strong understanding of API design, distributed systems, service architecture, and cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS
• Ability to translate complex business logic into scalable, reliable technical solutions and navigate ambiguity with strong ownership
• Experience partnering with Product and Data Science teams on experimentation and incorporating data-driven inputs into production systems
• Familiarity with modern software development practices, including AI-assisted development tools
