Job description

About Halyard

Halyard Collective is a private equity firm built on a simple idea: AI will create lasting value in the service businesses that use it to change how work gets done. We acquire those businesses and build alongside the people who operate them.

We work as owners, with direct responsibility for results. Our first portfolio is in property management, where our software already supports daily operations across maintenance, accounting, communications, and customer service.

The Role

We are looking for a hands‑on engineer who can turn business problems into working software.

You will work directly with Halyard's technical leadership and portfolio company teams to build our shared technology platform. It connects business systems and data, runs AI agents and automated workflows, and powers the applications employees use to manage daily operations. Your work will span the platform and the business: understand how a process works, decide what to automate, build the required systems, and make sure they work in production.

This is a broad engineering role with substantial ownership. You should be able to take a defined business problem from investigation through release, make sound technical decisions, and work through unfamiliar systems. You will have a close technical partner for architecture and direction, with room to own increasingly large parts of the product and platform.

What You'll Do
  • Build software around real operations. Work with employees to understand their processes, identify where work gets stuck, and build tools that improve speed, accuracy, and service.
  • Develop AI agents and workflows. Give agents the tools, data, permissions, and human review steps they need to complete useful work. Build evaluations and controls that make their behavior reliable.
  • Ship applications from end to end. Build interfaces, APIs, data models, and background services. Follow features through deployment and daily use.
  • Connect systems and data. Integrate property management, accounting, telephony, and email systems, including legacy platforms with incomplete APIs.
  • Improve the shared platform. Turn solutions for one business into reusable capabilities for the next, while keeping business-specific rules out of the platform.
  • Own the quality of what you ship. Investigate failures, fix root causes, and improve tests and monitoring. Account for bad data, partial failures, duplicate events, and changing third-party systems.
  • Support new acquisitions. Help connect systems, migrate data, and adapt workflows as new companies join the portfolio.

Our stack centers on TypeScript, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, and Google Cloud. We use AI coding tools extensively and expect engineers to understand, verify, and take responsibility for the code they ship.

What You'll Bring
  • 4+ years of software engineering experience, including building and operating production applications.
  • Strong full-stack development skills and the ability to work effectively in a large, unfamiliar codebase.
  • Strong TypeScript or JavaScript experience, practical SQL skills, and experience designing APIs and relational data models.
  • Experience delivering projects with incomplete requirements: clarify the problem, choose a practical scope, and carry the work through to release.
  • Good judgment about what belongs in deterministic code, what benefits from an LLM, and where a person needs to remain in control.
  • A systematic approach to debugging across application code, data pipelines, permissions, and external services.
  • The ability to discuss business processes with non-technical employees and explain technical decisions clearly.
  • Comfort working in a small team where priorities come from operating businesses and results matter more than feature count.
Nice to Have
  • Production experience with AI agents, tool calling, workflow orchestration, or evaluations.
  • Experience with Google Cloud, containers, infrastructure as code, and deployment pipelines.
  • Experience integrating legacy systems or working with inconsistent operational data.
  • Familiarity with property management, accounting, or another operations‑heavy service business.
  • Experience building shared software used by multiple companies or business units.
Location & Compensation

Based in San Francisco, or able to travel frequently to San Francisco, with some travel to portfolio company offices.

  • Base salary: $200,000-$300,000, depending on experience.
  • Performance bonus tied to business impact and the quality and reliability of delivered systems.
  • Long-term equity incentive in Halyard and/or its platforms.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
