Job summary

UnitedHealth Group is seeking a Senior Software Engineer focused on data engineering to design and deploy enterprise-scale, AI-powered data solutions in an Azure cloud environment. You will build scalable ETL/ELT pipelines using Spark, Python, Scala, and Java, while ensuring responsible AI and robust data governance.

Responsibilities include optimizing data processing, evaluating new trends, and collaborating with cross-functional teams on architecture and CI/CD DevOps pipelines.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional Software Engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of Data Engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of SQL/T-SQL/ETL development experience.
  • 3+ years building apps with Scala, Python, JSON and Web Services.
  • 3+ years with distributed systems: Spark, Databricks, Hadoop or Snowflake.
  • 2+ years Python development; 1+ years Azure/AWS cloud exposure.
  • 1+ years of CI/CD and DevOps practices.
  • 1+ years shell scripting and automation tools.
  • 1+ years AI/ML‑driven solutions.

As a Senior Software Engineer specializing in data engineering and intelligent solutions, you will design, build, and deploy enterprise-scale software, cloud databases, and automated ETL workflows. In this role, you will leverage enterprise-approved AI tools and emerging technology trends to automate data processing, enhance database performance, and build intelligent data platforms. Working within an agile cloud environment on Azure, you will collaborate with cross-functional engineering and architecture teams to deliver scalable, AI-powered data solutions with a strong emphasis on responsible technology use and continuous innovation.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions and automated frameworks to address complex business challenges with an emphasis on responsible use of AI
  • Use enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline workflows, automate data transformation, and drive continuous improvement across data engineering pipelines
  • Evaluate emerging technology trends to inform solution design, database architecture, and strategic data engineering innovation
  • Build, optimize, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT data pipelines and big data infrastructure using Spark, Scala, Python, and Java
  • Develop advanced SQL and T-SQL procedures, database schemes, and automated validation rules across cloud database environments
  • Configure, manage, and optimize cloud database and data orchestration technologies including Azure SQL Database, Databricks, ADLS, and Azure Data Factory
  • Build and maintain automated CI/CD DevOps pipelines and write scripting automation using PowerShell and Linux Bash
  • Perform performance tuning, code reviews, and automated testing across complex distributed big data platforms

Required Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of professional experience in Software Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in Data Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience with SQL, T-SQL, and ETL development
  • 3+ years of professional experience developing applications using Scala, Python, JSON, and Web Services
  • 3+ years of professional experience working with distributed systems technologies such as Spark, Databricks, Hadoop, or Snowflake
  • 2+ years of experience in Python development2+ years of experience developing with Java/J2EE, Web Services, Spring, and Hibernate
  • 1+ years of experience developing solutions hosted within public cloud providers such as Azure/AWS
  • 1+ years of experience in CI/CD and DevOps practices
  • 1+ years of experience with shell scripting and automation tools
  • 1+ years of experience with AI/ML-driven solutions
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent technical experience in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
  • Experience integrating enterprise AI capabilities, machine learning frameworks, or predictive analytics into ETL/database platforms
  • Knowledge of responsible AI frameworks, data governance, and cloud security best practices
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum software development environment
  • Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Data Engineer Associate, Azure AI Engineer Associate, or Azure Developer Associate)

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $91,700 to $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
