Job summary

The National Library of Medicine is seeking a hands-on Senior Security Engineer to join the Security Compliance team in Bethesda, MD. You will implement security controls across on‑prem and cloud environments, drive FISMA/NIST compliance, and collaborate with ISSO, tool owners, and system administrators to strengthen the organization’s security posture.

You will lead vulnerability management, cloud security, SIEM, and emerging AI‑based tooling initiatives, while providing guidance to developers

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical field; 10+ years IT security with 7+ years in security engineering.
• Experience securing on‑prem and cloud environments (AWS/GCP/Azure).
• FISMA/NIST RMF compliance, ATO/POA&M experience.
• Experience with vulnerability management, security testing, remediation workflows.
• Familiar with AI/ML integration in security tooling and operations.
• CISSP certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Enhance and automate security and compliance checks; evaluate AI capabilities to improve coverage.
• Implement security controls for on‑prem and cloud environments; ensure FISMA/NIH rules compliance.
• Support identity access, privileged access, and encryption security services.
• Integrate and optimize SIEM solutions (e.g., Splunk) for monitoring and compliance.
• Conduct threat modeling and risk assessments for cloud deployments.
• Provide security guidance to developers and operations; promote security awareness.
• Analyze vulnerability data to identify systemic risks and remediation opportunities.
• Produce and maintain security program documentation and SOPs.
