Senior Scientist – Maritime Networking and Autonomy Software (REQ 314)

Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is looking for a highly motivated Senior Scientist to join our Concord, MA team full-time. Ideal candidates will have an MS or PhD degree, professional experience in proposing, planning, and executing technology development programs, and fluency with C++ or Rust software development. Successful applicants will work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to propose, architect, design and build maritime sensing, communications, and autonomy software in support of national security applications. Our team supports R&D for a wide variety of maritime systems including sonar systems, autonomous vehicles, delay tolerant networks, underwater sensing, tracking, and communication arrays, and payloads for unmanned underwater vehicles. A background in maritime communications, networking, autonomous systems, embedded signal processing, and an understanding of Navy technologies and operations are desirable. APS works on exciting, technically challenging, research & development programs where multidisciplinary teams work closely to address difficult national security needs. At APS you will work in a small company environment where technical and administrative excellence are rewarded, and an entrepreneurial spirit is encouraged. This position will allow applicants to make meaningful contributions to the APS mission.

Job Functions and Responsibilities

In this role, you will help develop and implement software for:

  • Communication and networking protocols in challenged environments
  • Command and control interfaces, simulations, and visualizations
  • Acoustic, signal processing and autonomy algorithms for subsea sensor systems
  • Acoustic payloads for subsea and surface autonomous systems
  • Autonomous maritime surface and subsea systems
Required Skills and Attributes
  • MS or PhD degree in computer science, engineering, ocean engineering, applied math/physics, or a related technical discipline, with 5 or more years of related professional experience
  • Experience supporting and partnering with senior technical staff to develop innovative technology solutions that meet customer/user needs
  • Ability to contribute to and lead complex technical tasks at a detailed level
  • Fluency with C++ or Rust in a Linux environment, and modern software tools (git, Docker, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of software design and user experience (UX) principles
  • Excellent communication and interaction skills with project managers, IPT leads, and customers
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance
Preferred Skills and Attributes
  • 10 years of professional experience
  • Background in autonomy, networking or communications theory, maritime systems, or experience with U.S. Navy undersea warfare leadership and operations.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical programs, including scheduling, budgeting, resource coordination, and accountability for deliverables.
  • Experience contributing to and leading programs through various stages along the technology lifecycle, from science and technology to research, development and deployment.
