Job summary

RigUp is seeking a Senior Safety Engineer to provide expert leadership in process safety, loss prevention, and fire protection for capital projects. You will apply engineering principles, standards, and risk-based methods to identify hazards, mitigate exposure, and protect personnel and assets.

You will independently execute complex assignments, guide safety studies, interface with clients and multidisciplinary teams, and deliver robust technical direction.

Qualifications

• Requires a BS degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Fire Protection Engineering or closely related discipline.
• Minimum of 12 years of progressive engineering experience including project leadership and mentoring.
• Deep vertical expertise in Loss Prevention or Process Safety with cross-discipline understanding.

Responsibilities

• Lead process hazard analyses and risk assessments (HAZID/HAZOP/What-If/LOPA).
• Evaluate hazards for onshore methanol facility projects.
• Author/review process safety philosophies, design criteria and specifications.
• Review PFDs, P&IDs, data sheets, plot plans, cause-and-effect diagrams and narratives.
• Assess siting, occupied buildings, equipment spacing, hazardous area classification, escalation.
• Lead MOC, PSSR, and incident investigations within PSM frameworks.
• Demonstrate technical leadership and cross-functional collaboration on client projects.

Job description

We are seeking a Senior Safety Engineer to provide technical leadership and high-level engineering support across process safety, loss prevention, and fire protection for capital projects. This role serves as a subject matter expert tasked with applying engineering principles, industry standards, regulatory requirements, and risk-based methodologies to identify hazards, mitigate exposure, and protect personnel, assets, and business continuity. The successful candidate will independently execute complex assignments, guide safety studies, interface directly with clients and multidisciplinary engineering teams, and deliver robust technical direction.

Core Responsibilities

• Execute and lead comprehensive process hazard analyses and risk assessments, including HAZID, HAZOP, What-If/Checklist, LOPA, and related qualitative/semi-quantitative evaluations.
• Evaluate process hazards involving flammable, combustible, toxic, reactive, and high-energy materials and processes for an onshore methanol facility project.
• Author and review process safety philosophies, design criteria, engineering specifications, consequence analyses, and technical studies.
• Analyze process and engineering documentation, including PFDs, P&IDs, equipment data sheets, plot plans, cause-and-effect diagrams, and control narratives.
• Assess facility siting, occupied building risk assessments, equipment spacing, hazardous area classification, and escalation scenarios.
• Facilitate Management of Change (MOC), Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), and incident investigations within established process safety management frameworks.
• Demonstrate technical leadership, adaptability, and collaboration when managing client requirements, complex team dynamics, and cross-functional engineering deliverables.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of 12 years of progressive engineering experience, including demonstrated experience leading projects and mentoring technical personnel.
• Deep vertical technical confidence in either Loss Prevention or Process Safety, alongside strong foundational awareness and familiarity with the complementary discipline.
• Proven technical domain experience within oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, chemical, LNG, hydrogen, or related energy process industries.
• Strong working knowledge of major process safety hazards, industrial fire protection systems, and applicable industry codes (including NFPA, API, OSHA, IFC, and IBC).
• Demonstrated proficiency discussing, applying, and working with industry-standard engineering software platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license, or status as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) actively eligible to obtain PE licensure.
• Dual subject matter expertise in both Loss Prevention and Process Safety disciplines.
• Advanced degree in Engineering, Safety, Fire Protection, or a related technical field.
• Certified Functional Safety Professional (CFSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or equivalent technical credential.
• Experience in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), technical consulting, or owner/operator environments.
• Location: Houston, TX (Local candidates required)
• Work Arrangement: Hybrid (3 days in-office; subject to full-time on-site requirements based on client scope)
• Duration: 12+ Months
• Compensation Rate: $73.55 – $84.59 per hour
