Job summary

Southland Industries is seeking a Safety Specialist to inspect job sites, document incidents, and coordinate safety programs. You will ensure compliance with company, state, and federal OSHA requirements and promote health and safety standards across projects.

The role involves maintaining reports and training logs, supporting emergency response, and contributing to incident investigations. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Health or Environmental Applied Sciences or related discipline or equivalent education/training/experience.
• 3+ years of relevant experience including employee training experience.
• CPR and First Aid certifications required; instructor preferred.
• OSHA 10hr, 30hr, 40hr training required; OSHA 500/CHST/ASP certifications required.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA CFR 1926 standards and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

• Conduct inspections of small to mid-size job sites to ensure OSHA compliance.
• Document safety inspections, cite issues and recommend corrective actions.
• Maintain documentation: accident reports, inspection logs and training records.
• Provide emergency response and participate in investigations; report to regulators as required.
• Coordinate and facilitate safety training; train junior safety staff as needed.
• Participate in safety projects and attend owner/client meetings.

Job description

This role supports a safe work environment by conducting inspections, documenting incidents, and coordinating safety programs and training.

• Tours and inspects small to mid-size job sites independently to ensure compliance with company, state and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations. Reports concerns to safety management. Ensures health and safety standards are met by coordinating, promoting and conducting various programs and activities related to the safety management system.
• Documents safety inspections, citing dangerous areas/procedures and recommending corrective procedures. Provides recommendations for correcting non-compliance issues.
• Ensures cited issues are corrected within designated timeframe.
• Maintains all site required documentation related to safety issues, including accident reports, inspection reports and training logs. Reviews daily job hazard logs and takes action as required.
• Provides emergency response to employees as needed. Participates in and documents information for the investigation of accidents and injuries and submits data to regulatory agencies as required.
• Participates in development of training materials and coordinates and facilitates employee training as necessary.
• Trains less-experienced safety employees as needed.
• Participates in ad-hoc safety projects.
• Participates in owner and client meetings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Health or Environmental Applied Sciences or related discipline, or equivalent education, training and/or experience
• 3+ years of relevant experience, including employee training experience
• Certifications in CPR and First Aid required
• CPR and First Aid instructor preferred
• OSHA 10hr, OSHA 30hr, OSHA 40hr training required
• OSHA 500, CHST or ASP certifications required
• Excellent working knowledge of health and safety management systems; OSHA CFR 1926 standards or the state construction safety regulations
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Excellent customer service and organizational skills
• Strong computer skills: experience with Microsoft Office suite and ability to access OSHA information via the internet
• Sound knowledge of safety operating processes and procedures
