Job summary

Genie in Redmond, WA is seeking a Software Engineer Principal I - Robotics to lead advanced control systems for our vehicle platforms. Hybrid work with three days in the office.

You will design architecture, implement ROS2 control, and mentor teams, applying deep robotics knowledge to real-time embedded systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or similar.
• Deep understanding of classical and modern control theory, including vehicle kinematics and dynamics.
• Experience with ROS2, ros2_control, hardware interfaces, and node lifecycle management.
• Experience designing distributed control architectures for mobile robots, automotive systems, or heavy machinery.
• Experience with CAN bus (J1939 or CANopen), I2C, SPI, RS485.
• Strong real-time C++ skills (C++20/23) for constrained embedded environments.

Responsibilities

• Architect the Vehicle Control System.
• Lead the design of the complete vehicle architecture.
• Decide what runs on the central high-performance embedded computer vs distributed real-time microcontrollers.
• Develop firmware and drivers to interface ROS2 with hardware.
• Design and tune closed-loop control algorithms (PID, MPC, LQR).
• Create accurate vehicle state estimates through sensor fusion.
• Mentor teammates and share expertise across teams.
• Bridge knowledge gaps between embedded and application software teams.
