Job summary

Woolpert in Ohio is seeking a Senior Roadway Design Technical Expert to join our Transportation Team. You will lead complex roadway and multimodal projects across multiple clients, guiding design decisions from concept to final plans and mentoring junior staff.

You will work with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, Civil 3D, and AutoCAD, coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams. This hybrid role supports growth across our Ohio offices and reports to the Ohio Transportation Practice Lead.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• 8+ years of professional experience; 15+ preferred; expert level.
• Must be a licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
• If licensed in another state, ability to obtain Ohio license within 6 months.
• Ability to lead design and allocate work to others.

Responsibilities

• Design conceptual, schematic, and preliminary roadway plans; decide on intersections.
• Lead complex roadway projects including bikeways, collateral facilities, and planning.
• Direct engineering tasks: highway design, alignments, roundabout design, drainage.
• Prepare documents with local/federal standards; cost estimates and bids.
• Review design plans and supporting documents for accuracy.
• Utilize Civil 3D, MicroStation, ORD, and/or AutoCAD for designs.
• Assist PMs with proposals, scope, schedule, and budget.

Woolpert is hiring a SeniorRoadway Design Technical Expert tojoin our dynamic Transportation Team at one of our Ohio offices. This position reports to the Ohio Transportation Practice Lead and is responsible forresponsible for designs of roadway, bikeway, trail and pedestrian projects.

They are responsible for the conceptual and preliminary layout of complex roadway, highway and interchange designs. They may also lead designs of roadway, bikeway, trail and pedestrian projects. Additionally, they are looked to in order to provide guidance to Project Managers on designs as well as train other staff. The Senior Roadway Design Specialist is looked to for design expertise and the ability to see projects from a conceptual standpoint and make design calls that will impact the final design of the project. This role will work on a variety of transportation projects spanning multiple clients, states and project types. They will be exposed to and work closely with other design teams in bridges, traffic, site development, planning amongst others. The Engineering Design Team is quickly growing, allowing for accelerated growth and upward mobility opportunities.

What You Will Do:

• Be an expert in the design of concept, schematic and preliminary level plans. Be able to layout and design complex geometry and make recommendations for designs such as the best type of intersection for a particular project and geography.
• Lead design of complex roadway and transportation projects that require creative solutions. Projects include roadway, bikeways, pedestrian facilities, roundabouts, trails, multi-modal transportation or transportation planning.
• Direct engineering design tasks such as highway and street design, roadway alignments, roundabout design, roadway grading and modeling, curb ramp design, signing and pavement plan, maintenance of traffic, storm drainage.
• Use local and federal roadway standards to prepare preliminary and final design documents, cost estimates, and bid documents.
• Perform detailed review of design plans and supporting documents.
• Perform designs using software including MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer (ORD), AutoCAD, and/or Civil 3D.
• Assist Project Managers in the writing of proposals as well as preparing scope, schedule and budget of projects

What You Will Bring:

• Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or related technical design field.
• A minimum of 8+ years of professional experience required, 15+ years preferred. This is an expert level position, so a solid background in design is required.
• Must be a licensed PE
• If licensed in another state, the ability to obtain a license in Ohio within 6 months.
• Ability to lead design as well as allocate work to others.
• Expertise in Roadway, Highway, Trail, Bikeway/Pedestrian and/or Roadway Drainage design.
• Expertise in Civil 3D and/or MicroStation, and OpenRoads Designer (ORD).
• Experience with ODOT, INDOT, PennDOT, FDOT, TxDOT is a plus.
• Ability and desire to mentor design staff.
• Possess strong organizational skills to successfully manage multiple priorities.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
• Ability to work across disciplines and coordinate with other firms on projects
