Job summary

LJB Inc. is seeking an experienced Roadway Design Engineer to support our Raleigh, NC Transportation Practice. The role focuses on delivering roadway design from concept through final bid packages, with mentorship of junior engineers and direct client interaction.

The candidate will work on traditional and design-build projects, liaising with NCDOT and local governments, while expanding national practice capabilities. North Carolina-based remote work is possible for qualified candidates.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
• P.E. license required; NC PE preferred.
• 10–20 years of progressive engineering experience in transportation/roadway design.
• DOT design project experience required; experience with multiple DOTs is a plus.
• Micro Station, Geopak, OpenRoads Designer software experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform roadway design tasks from preliminary to final design.
• Develop specifications, cost estimates, and final bid packages.
• Coordinate with client staff and project managers (NCDOT, local governments, private clients).
• Provide design services for traditional design-bid-build and design-build projects.
• Mentor junior engineers in final design, cross sections, traffic control, drainage, and markings.
• Coordinate design activities among staff, subcontractors, and client managers.
• Participate in project decisions on technical approaches, cost and scheduling.
• Identify variances and implement corrective actions.
• Engage in transportation organizations (ASHE, ASCE, DBIA).

We are currently seeking an experienced Roadway Design Engineer to support and grow our Transportation Practice in our Raleigh, NC office. We are open to fully remote candidates who are located in North Carolina.

Salary Range: $110,000-155,000 based upon experience, certifications, and regional market standards.

Roadway Design Engineer Essential Functions

• Perform engineering design tasks for roadway projects from preliminary to final design.
• Develop specifications, cost estimates, and prepare final bid packages.
• Established working relationships and contact with client technical staff and project managers especially in NCDOT, local governments, and private clients.
• Provide engineering design services for traditional design-bid-build projects and design-build transportation projects.
• Mentor and assist junior engineers in developing final design plans, including but not limited to implementation and knowledge of cross sections, traffic control, drainage, and signing and pavement markings plans.
• Coordinate design activities and meetings between design staff, subcontractors, and client managers.
• Participate in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost and scheduling performance.
• Identify schedule and cost variances and develop and implement recommendations for corrective action.
• Participate in project by completing tasks within schedule and budget with teams comprised of different disciplines.
• Actively participate and serve in leadership position in transportation related organizations such as ASHE, ASCE, DBIA, etc.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

ROADWAY DESIGN ENGINEER ESSENTIAL CREDENTIALS:

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering required.
• P.E. license required, North Carolina PE is preferred. Successful candidates will be expected to get their NC PE within the first year of hire.
• 10 to 20 years’ or more progressive engineering experience possessing a broad knowledge and experience in transportation and roadway design.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5 years of project management experience.
• Experience working on DOT design projects is required, experience with multiple DOTs is a plus.
• Micro Station, Geopak, OpenRoads Designer software experience.
