Senior Research Associate, Adaptive ProblemMapping

This 100% external-fund-supported position is funded by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. The incumbent will help create an adaptive problem map of connections among existing data sets, completed and ongoing research questions, and desired management decisions for invasive Grass Carp in Lake Erie and possibly other Great Lakes. They will consult project partners to compile additional ongoing and potential questions. Subsequently, the individual will perform statistical analysis on ecological data to fill knowledge gaps identified during the mapping process. Regular use of software such as Excel, Access, and R is required. The person will also participate in trips on the Great Lakes and connecting waterways for the collection of invasive grass carp and possibly other species as part of ongoing removal or specific scientific studies. When necessary, they will assist with processing biological and other samples on boats and in the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must have a PhD or anticipate defense of a PhD during the current academic semester in Fisheries, Quantitative Biology, Environmental or Biological Sciences, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience in framing structure and relationships among pertinent information types, germane data sets, applicable concepts, and relevant decisions.
• Knowledge of basic fish ecology, limnology, and Great Lakes science.
• Ability to gather, organize, and manage appropriate data sets needed for analysis of critical knowledge gaps.
• Experience collecting and analyzing biological samples from boats or other platforms in Great Lakes, connected waterways, large rivers, or other large water bodies, including operation and data processing from standard fisheries and limnological gear.
• Experience presenting and discussing results and conclusions of data collection and analysis and modeling to scientific and public audiences, i.e., track record of posters and talks at conferences and meetings.
• A track record of writing and submitting manuscripts for journal publication.
• Experience working with or for state natural resources agencies.
• Expertise with data storage and analysis packages such as Excel, Access, SAS, R, STAN, RTMB.
• A valid U.S. driver’s license and the ability to drive University of Toledo vehicles is required.
• Overnight travel may be required for collection and other trips.
• The ability to lift sampling gear weighing up to 80 lbs with assistance from another crew member.
• Must work well as a team member, sometimes under uncomfortable field conditions (e.g., cold, heat, rain).
