Job summary

Midwest Reliability Organization in Saint Paul, MN is seeking a Senior Reliability Assessment Engineer to serve as SME on resource and transmission adequacy analysis of the bulk power system in the region. This role covers power flow and dynamics modeling, reliability assessments, and transfer capability studies.

You will collaborate with FERC, NERC, ERAG, and registered entities, supervise data collections, analytical studies, and reports, and support regional assessments such as SRA/WRA.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the power industry is required.
  • Strong knowledge of BPS operations including a high degree of professional competence and skill; mastery of generation or transmission modeling, operation or planning principles is required.
  • Professional Engineer License is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Supports annual seasonal reliability assessment report development, including the Summer Reliability Assessment (SRA), the Winter Reliability Assessment (WRA) and any Special Reliability Assessments for the MRO region.
  • Supports the internal assessment effort for both the MRO Summer Regional Assessment, the Winter Regional Assessment, and the ERO Interconnection Wide Transfer Capability studies.
  • Prepares and presents reliability assessment and transmission adequacy results and reports to MRO staff, various NERC committees, and MRO stakeholder outreach.
  • Monitors and provides oversight on power system models and technical studies prepared by Planning Coordinators for the Eastern Interconnection and within the MRO Region.
  • Works closely with NERC and other Regional Entities to develop regional transmission assessments and transfer capability studies.
  • Supports the Eastern Interconnection wide analysis for frequency response, stability and electromagnetic transient studies.

Job Summary

The Senior Reliability Assessment Engineer serves as a subject matter expert on the resource and transmission adequacy analysis of the bulk power system (BPS) in the region and on related power flow and dynamics modeling, reliability assessments, and transfer capability studies. This position supports a variety of technical data collections, analytical studies, reviews, and analysis of technical difficulty and critical importance. This position collaborates with technical staff from Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Eastern Interconnection Reliability Assessment Group (ERAG), and individual registered entities within the MRO region.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supports annual seasonal reliability assessment report development, including the Summer Reliability Assessment (SRA), the Winter Reliability Assessment (WRA) and any Special Reliability Assessments for the MRO region, to ensure that each assessment is complete, accurate, and timely

Qualifications, Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required, Bachelor’s Degree in another discipline directly applicable to the reliability and security of the BPS and directly related experience may be considered in lieu of Electrical Engineering degree
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the power industry is required
  • Strong knowledge of BPS operations including a high degree of professional competence and skill; mastery of generation or transmission modeling, operation or planning principles is required
  • Ability to assess and execute a wide range of complex electrical power systems analyses and reports concerning the operation and planning of proposed and actual generation and transmission systems is required
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing to both technical and non-technical audiences is desired
  • Professional Engineer License is desired

Physical Working Conditions and Travel Requirements
  • Standard office environment requires mobility and sedentary work
  • The Senior Reliability Assessment Engineer may occasionally need to be available outside of business hours to respond to corporate matters
  • Travel Requirement: Approximately 15%; this position requires the ability to obtain documentation to allow for travel to and from Canada
Pay Range

$171,600- $196,000* annual

* Based on MRO’s Pay Philosophy wage range – Developing Employee – Proficient Employee (75% – midpoint).

Applicants with varying levels of experience are encouraged to apply; position level and wage will be evaluated and adjusted accordingly.
