Job summary

Exelon Corporation is seeking a paralegal professional to provide comprehensive legal research and support within the Legal Department. You will assist attorneys, manage data, and help coordinate projects in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree or equivalent with 4+ years of legal experience, or paralegal certification. Familiarity with Lexis and PACER is preferred, and multi-tasking in a team setting is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with 4+ years legal experience; or paralegal certification
  • Or associate degree or equivalent with 6+ years legal experience
  • Eight years of legal technical and/or eDiscovery experience can substitute for a degree
  • Thorough knowledge of laws, regulations, court practices and procedures
  • Excellent legal research skills with electronic search technology and relevant databases
  • Strong judgment and professionalism; ability to manage workload and deadlines
  • Strong oral and written communication; familiarity with legal terminology
  • Organizational and interpersonal skills; willingness to take on increased responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Directly assist attorneys by conducting factual or legal research, analyzing documents, and drafting legal documents under supervision
  • Extract information from records to create and maintain internal databases
  • Regularly initiate, develop, and enhance processes to organize department workflow or projects
  • Organize and prepare written management reports and present legal information to supervisors
  • Coordinate efforts of legal administrative staff on special projects
  • Handle special administrative projects for Legal
  • Interact with management teams as project coordinator for clients' legal projects

Primary Purpose

Under minimal supervision, provides comprehensive legal research and problem resolution for areas within the Legal Department, and performs, complex and confidential legal assignments related to position function. Assists with various plan administrations and transactions, and handles substantive functions that do not require a law degree. Works closely with other legal and governmental disciplines and various clients. Assists in the investigation, planning, research and evaluation process directed towards the management of the Company's legal exposure, and supports implementation of the Company's business plans. Acts as point of contact with courts, agencies, clients, retained counsel and adversaries where appropriate.

Primary Duties
  • Directly assist attorneys by conducting factual or legal research, analyzing documents, and/or drafting legal documents under attorney supervision (50%)
  • Extract information from records and documents to create and maintain internal databases1 (15%)
  • Regularly initiate, develop, and enhance processes to organize department workflow or projects (10%)
  • Organize and prepare written management reports and provide oral presentations of legal information to supervisors (10%)
  • Coordinate efforts of legal administrative assistants and temporary clerical staff on special projects and assignments (5%)
  • Handle special administrative projects for Legal (5%)
  • Under supervision of appropriate counsel, may interact with management teams in other organizations, serving as project coordinator for clients' legal projects (5%)
Job Scope
  • Supports attorneys and Company management in legal and/or business affairs; and interfaces with the courts, agencies and their personnel, outside counsel and their staff, and adversaries.
  • Capable of fulfilling all duties of the paralegal position and monitor paralegal work product.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent and minimum of 4 years of legal experience; or paralegal certification, or associate degree or equivalent and minimum of 6 years of legal experience; or eight years of legal technical and/or eDiscovery experience can substitute for a degree
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of laws, regulations, court practices, and procedures as needed for the particular duties required for a specific position. Possess excellent legal research skills, including knowledge of electronic search technology and relevant databases.
  • Possess demonstrated appropriate judgment and ingenuity to perform the functions of the position and the requirements of the practice in the most appropriate manner using the best methods and/or practices. Possess the ability and willingness to respond to workload demands, problems and situations appropriately and professionally.
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills, including being conversant with the legal terminology specific to the practice area. Possess organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess willingness to accept increased responsibilities and meet the demands of the practice in a mature and professional manner, whether working independently or as part of a team. Possess the willingness to work in a demanding environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with New Jersey state and BPU filing requirements and procedures, and electronic filing.
  • Advanced research skills, including Lexis and Pacer.
  • Experience providing support in connection with trial and/or hearing preparation.
  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively independently and as part of a team.
