Job description

Primary Purpose

The RN is a licensed professional who uses the Parkland nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery by the health care team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems, develops and implements an individualized plan of care, and evaluates the patient’s response. The RN utilizes knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment to assist patients to transition through the healthcare encounter without any preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions to health care personnel based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, each patient’s condition, and the competencies of the employee.

Location & Shift

Main Hospital Bldg 8th Floor – Night Shift (Full Time Position)

Education
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
Experience
  • Must have two years of nursing experience.
  • Preference for experience in an acute care setting.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
  • Must have a current, valid RN license or temporary RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing, or a valid Compact RN license.
  • Must have current healthcare provider BLS for Healthcare Providers certification from one of the following:
    • American Heart Association
    • American Red Cross
    • Military Training Network
Skills or Special Abilities
  • Provides care to the assigned patient population in accordance with the current State of Texas Nurse Practice Act, established protocols, multidisciplinary plan of care, and clinical area‑specific standards.
  • Provides continuous assessment, consults with other team members as required, and provides nursing care that demonstrates patient‑centered care.
  • Exercises independent judgment in providing nursing care.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills, good oral and written communication skills.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, and hospital staff in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Communicates via the overhead paging system when required.
  • Provides direction to non‑nursing staff, serves as a preceptor, and may serve as a charge nurse on rotation.
  • Prepares and conducts in‑service educational programs.
  • Demonstrates patient‑centered behaviors and nursing standards of care for specialty care areas.
Responsibilities
  • Serves as a patient advocate, focusing on patient needs, rights, confidentiality, and cultural preferences. Maintains positive relationships with internal and external customers and serves as a resource for patients, families, and the healthcare team. Provides patient education and may serve on community outreach activities.
  • Maintains and implements knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact nursing practice, ensuring the hospital complies with them.
  • Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to state and federal laws, accreditation agencies, and health plans; maintains knowledge of sanitation, infection control, safety, supplies, and equipment.
  • Completes appropriate patient assessments, admission criteria, determines clinical interventions, discharge planning, and interdisciplinary communication. Utilizes critical thinking, recognizes emergencies, and provides appropriate interventions. Documents care accurately and timely to meet department goals.
  • Seeks guidance from experienced staff when needed and collaborates with other staff to provide direction.
  • Identifies ways to improve work processes and patient/customer satisfaction; makes recommendations to supervisor and monitors results.
  • Stays updated on developments in nursing practice through seminars, workshops, journals, and professional organizations; integrates knowledge into work practices. Maintains State of Texas licensure as an RN and other required certifications.
  • Serves as a preceptor or trainer and may serve as a charge nurse on rotation.
