Job summary

Atomic Machines is hiring a seasoned software engineer to bring order to an ambiguous, multi-process, multi-material fab software stack. You will design and build distributed systems coordinating hardware across the robotic fleet, write tests, drive architecture decisions, and ensure observable, reliable operation.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years with external dependencies, strong Python skills, and proficiency in C++, Rust, or Go, plus a solid grounding in distributed systems.

Qualifications

• Requires 5+ years building or debugging systems with real external dependencies (hardware, embedded devices, networked services).
• Track record of making and defending nontrivial architecture decisions (build vs. buy, deployment topology, service boundaries).
• Strong Python skills and proficiency in at least one language (C++, Rust, or Go).
• Solid grounding in distributed systems fundamentals: state coordination, consistency, failure modes, concurrency.
• Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, or observability tooling in a codebase lacking them.
• Comfort operating against incomplete or contested specs and driving clarity.

Responsibilities

• Design and build distributed software systems coordinating state, timing, and behavior across manufacturing hardware; write, test, and debug sensors, actuators, and process controllers under real-time constraints.
• Develop workflows bridging manual and automated steps and coordinate handoffs between production and process development.
• Evolve architecture with API development to govern machine behavior across fleets; deliver value without waiting for a full rewrite.
