Posting Description

SENIOR REACTOR OPERATOR-TRAINING SUPERVISOR

Position at the Nuclear Reactor Laboratory. The role will manage the initial and requalification Reactor Operator training program, maintain a Senior Reactor Operator license for operating the MITR-II Research Reactor, and serve as Shift Supervisor. Responsibilities include:

  • Reactor startups and shutdowns
  • Control room coverage
  • Diagnostic tests, calibrations, refueling operations, and decontamination procedures
  • Preparation and shipment of radioactive samples for irradiation
  • Safety reviews and analyses of reactor system modifications and experiments
  • Training shift supervisors and other personnel on routine reactor operations
  • Assisting with special reactor and experimental projects
  • Adherence to radiation protection measures and sound radiological control judgment
  • Participation in annual requalification program for licensed personnel
  • Maintaining personnel tracking, exam writing/grading, oral walk-throughs, and other training duties as required
Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of technical college or Navy nuclear education
  • Currently licensed as a Senior Reactor Operator by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission or ability to obtain license within approximately one year of hire

Preferred:

  • Experience as an instructor (e.g., Navy Nuclear Prototype or Power School instructor)
  • Knowledge of systematic training approach, e.g., INPO training certification
  • Background in physics or chemistry
  • At least one year of experience working with nuclear reactor mechanical or electrical systems
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for diverse staff, students, MIT community members, and external organizations
  • Detail-oriented and motivated to advance to senior level position if necessary
Physical & Work Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and climb ladders
  • Availability to cover evening, night, weekend, and overtime shifts as required
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status
  • English fluency required
Employment Details

The position will start as a term appointment, with the opportunity to be made permanent upon successful completion of the NRC senior reactor operator licensing exam. The exam must be taken at the first appropriate available date, normally within about one year from hire. Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check and passing a basic NRC form physical.
