Unit Supervisor / Senior Reactor Operator

Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, near Berwick, Pennsylvania

Unit Supervisors assist Shift Managers in their duties and assume their responsibilities when Shift Managers are unavailable. They direct the manipulation of unit controls, supervise Plant Control Operators and Nuclear Plant Operators, and provide leadership in both control room and field operations. They monitor plant operation and operator performance, respond to abnormalities, authorize maintenance activities, and direct actions during emergency situations.

Responsibilities

• Assist Shift Managers and assume direct responsibilities in their absence.
• Direct the manipulation of unit controls.
• Provide guidance, direction, and instruction to shift personnel for training, retraining, and requalification.
• Review procedures related to startup, shutdown, power operation, load changes, fuel handling, emergency situations, and surveillance activities.
• Ensure safe and efficient operation of the assigned unit within the Control Room.
• Supervise local operation of plant equipment and activities outside the Control Room.
• Monitor plant operation and operator performance.
• Respond to system or unit abnormalities, diagnose causes, and recommend corrective action.
• Authorize performance of maintenance activities and approve changes in equipment and system operational status.
• Direct Plant Control Operators in emergency situations per emergency operating procedures.
• Supervise and coordinate fuel handling activities.
• Provide leadership by conveying organizational values and motivating individuals toward goal achievement.
• Earn and maintain a Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license for the Susquehanna Nuclear Generating Station.

Minimum Requirements

1. Total education and power plant experience must meet one of the following criteria:
   • a) Minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent and one year or more as an Active Reactor Operator or Senior Reactor Operator at a commercial power reactor facility of the same vendor and vintage; or 1.5 years or more as an Active Reactor Operator or Senior Reactor Operator at a comparable (BWR/PWR) facility or at a non‑comparable commercial power reactor facility; or 2 years or more in a position equivalent to a reactor operator at a military reactor (qualified to manipulate or direct the manipulation of control rods).
   • b) BS degree or equivalent in engineering, engineering technology or related sciences, or a professional engineering license or non‑traditional degree and total responsible nuclear power plant experience greater than the following:
     • i) 18 months for a comparable facility
     • ii) 27 months for a non‑comparable facility
     • iii) 36 months for a non‑traditional degree
2. Satisfactory physical and mental condition evidenced by successfully passing company‑provided examinations in accordance with the code of Federal Regulations 10 CFR55.11 (a)(1) and (a)(2).
3. Responsible nuclear power plant experience to include 1.5 years and satisfactory completion of entry selection test.
4. Special requirements: Hold a senior operator's license for the unit(s) assigned.
5. Must meet the requirements of ANSI/ANS 3.1‑2014 for Senior Reactor Operator and REG Guide 1.8.

Preferred Qualifications

• Four (4) years of power plant experience.
