Job summary

Lsslibraries is seeking an experienced Rare Book and Paper Conservator to join their team in Bethesda, Maryland. The successful candidate will provide specialized conservation treatment for rare and unique historical materials, ensuring their preservation and accessibility to researchers and the public.

Ideal applicants should possess extensive technical skills and experience in library or archival conservation laboratories. Responsibilities include treatment of rare books and manuscripts, preparing materials for digitization, and maintaining conservation equipment.

Qualifications

• Minimum five years of experience in rare book and manuscript conservation.
• Demonstrated training through a qualified conservator or equivalent experience.
• Experience with complex conservation treatments on paper- and book-based collections.

Responsibilities

• Perform conservation treatment and stabilization of rare materials.
• Conduct various complex conservation tasks including cleaning and adhesive removal.
• Prepare collection materials for digitization and institutional loans.

Education

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Conservation or related field
