Job description

Senior R&D Electromagnetic Analysis Engineer

Location: Devens, MA. Type: Full-time, On-site.

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy. Combining decades of research, top talent, and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. We’re working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

Role Overview

The R&D team’s mission at CFS is to vet technical solutions to guide the overall SPARC subsystem design and plan for technology needs of future fusion power plants. The Electromagnetics Analysis Engineer will perform electromagnetic (EM) analysis of superconducting magnets using finite element and other methods, including non-linear, anisotropic behavior of high-temperature superconductors in both insulated and non-insulated magnet systems. The role also involves incorporating multi-physics (heat transfer, fluids, mechanics) behavior into simplified network circuit and/or FEA models, and validating simulations against experimental data.

Responsibilities
  • Perform electromagnetic analysis of superconducting magnets and inform design decisions.
  • Work with experimental teams on instrumentation, measurement, and correlation of experiment to analysis.
  • Develop new numerical tools as needed to facilitate multi-objective design optimization of high-temperature superconducting magnets.
  • Perform non-linear, heavily anisotropic E&M simulations in complicated geometries.
  • Identify enabling technologies in modeling and construction of high-temperature superconducting magnets.
  • Prepare reports and presentations.
  • Mentor and guide new team members in magnet design and analysis.
Qualifications
  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering or another relevant field with an EM background (physics, mechanical engineering, etc.).
  • 7+ years of experience modeling electromagnetics using the finite element method.
  • Strong background and theoretical understanding of computational electromagnetic analysis.
  • Experience modeling non-linear physics.
  • Experience with commercial finite element tools; COMSOL preferred.
  • Ability to customize commercial finite element tools or develop new in-house codes in modern programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, C, or C++.
  • Ability to quickly grasp experimental setups and analyze data to validate models.
  • Ability to clearly express and critique ideas.
  • Ability to innovate toward solutions for complex problems.
  • Emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity.
  • Drive toward commercially viable solutions.
  • History of thriving in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
Bonus Points
  • Multi-physics FEM modeling with electromagnetics, heat transfer, mechanics, fluids, structures, etc.
  • Experience working with superconducting non-linear physics.
  • Developing equivalent thermal and electrical circuit models.
  • Familiarity with agentic coding tools and best practices.
Must-Have Requirements
  • Perform activities such as sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.
Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $110,000 – $185,000 per year plus equity. The actual salary depends on level, location, qualifications, and experience.

  • Competitive compensation with equity.
  • 13 company-wide holidays.
  • Flexible vacation days.
  • 10 sick days.
  • Generous parental leave policy.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with employer matching.
  • Professional growth opportunities.
  • Team-building activities.
Values & Expectations

We value integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique. A drive toward commercially viable solutions and a history of thriving in fast-paced environments are also important.

Equal Opportunity Employer

We value diversity deeply and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally, regardless of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law.

Export Control Compliance

This role requires compliance with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information; any offer of employment will be contingent on the need for compliance.
