Position Description
This role forms part of JERA's growing North American Gas Trading business, which is expected to transition onto JERAGM's trading platform. This business is wholly owned by JERA Co., Inc. and will focus on US natural gas trading, optimisation and market development across North America. Successful candidates will join during the build‑out phase ahead of the business's planned operational launch.
Key Role Responsibilities
- Serve as the key Quant contact for JERAGM Americas, supporting both Front Office commercial activity and Middle Office risk, valuation and control processes in the US timezone.
- Provide quantitative support for deal structuring, valuation and commercial decision-making across US pipeline gas, gas storage, US power plant/VPP and related structured physical and financial transactions.
- Develop, review and enhance valuation models, market parameter methodologies and risk analytics used for both trading support and independent valuation oversight.
- Work closely with the Singapore Quant team to align Americas modelling approaches with global methodology, model governance and control standards.
- Communicate valuation results, assumptions, commercial drivers and risk impacts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Support independent review, validation and documentation of valuation methodologies, assumptions and controls for the Americas portfolio.
- Share technical knowledge with colleagues and help build quantitative understanding across JERAGM Americas and the wider Quant function.
Key Qualifications and Experience
- Significant experience in quantitative valuation, risk management or structuring within a commodity trading company, utility, investment bank or comparable energy-market environment.
- Experience supporting both commercial/front-office valuation needs and middle-office valuation, risk or control requirements.
- Strong practical knowledge of US pipeline gas markets, including transportation, basis, storage, optionality and physical/financial deal structures.
- Strong knowledge of US power markets and power plant economics, including generation optionality, heat rates, spark spreads, dispatch and VPP valuation.
- Proven ability to value structured commodity transactions, build robust valuation models, estimate valuation and hedge parameters, and explain commercial risks clearly.
- Strong understanding of the deal life cycle for option-style and structured transactions, including deal assessment, booking, model implementation, control review and expiry processes.
- Experience designing and implementing quantitative solutions that meet business, valuation, risk and control requirements.
- Experience sharing technical knowledge and supporting colleague development is desirable.
Technical Expertise
- Advanced knowledge of financial derivatives and option theory as applied to commodity markets, including:
- Stochastic price processes;
- Parameter estimation; and
- Valuation techniques, including closed-form and Monte Carlo methods.
- Good working knowledge of Value at Risk methodologies and related risk measures.
- Understanding of mathematical optimisation techniques used in portfolio analysis, asset optimisation and fundamental modelling.
- Strong programming capability in development and scientific languages such as Python, including NumPy and pandas.
- Experience using or deploying solutions to cloud platforms such as Azure would be helpful.
- Advanced Excel & VBA capability is expected.
