Job summary

Pennington County is seeking a Chief Deputy Public Defender to oversee and supervise the public defenders in day-to-day practice, manage staff, and handle a substantial case load while supporting the Director in Office representation. The role requires building strong relationships with the Clerk of Courts, judiciary, court services, sheriff, Human Services, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

• JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Substantial experience supervising staff and/or attorneys.
• Substantial jury trial experience.
• Commitment to providing effective, professional legal services to indigent defendants.

Responsibilities

• Directly supervise attorneys in felony, misdemeanor, or juvenile courts.
• Assign cases to attorneys and manage caseloads.
• Represent clients at all phases of the criminal justice process.
• Assist in personnel matters and work with justice stakeholders.
• Perform other management duties as assigned and ensure policy compliance.
