Job Details: Job Location: Charlotte, NC 28217, Travel Percentage: Up to 25%, Senior Project Manager – Structural Steel Fabrication & Erection
At Sure Steel, Inc., we are more than just a construction company – we are builders of success, integrity, and innovation. We have established ourselves as a trusted leader in the steel fabrication and construction industry. Our commitment to excellence, safety, and customer satisfaction has earned us a reputation for delivering top-quality projects on time and within budget. Our team is dedicated to delivering innovative solutions to meet the unique needs of each project, ensuring safety, efficiency, and client satisfaction.
Overview:
The Senior Project Manager will own the full lifecycle of complex structural steel fabrication and erection projects, from estimating and detailing through shop fabrication and field erection, with Mass Timber experience strongly preferred. This role carries elevated accountability for project P&L, cross-functional leadership, and direct supervision and mentorship of multiple Project Managers, in addition to the core planning, execution, and delivery responsibilities. We are looking for a strategic leader who can manage multiple high-value projects simultaneously, navigate complex stakeholder relationships, and drive continuous improvement across the project delivery function.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Project Planning and Portfolio Oversight
- Own the development and continuous refinement of comprehensive project plans, master schedules, and budgets across multiple concurrent projects, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and profitability targets.
- Direct procurement strategy for mill steel, joists and deck, and other materials in partnership with erection subcontractors, detailers, vendors, and suppliers, negotiating terms and resolving supply chain risks that could impact multiple project timelines.
- Provide senior‑level review and sign‑off on project specifications, structural and shop drawings, and contract documents, identifying contractual risk and ensuring alignment with both project requirements and company standards.
- Lead pre‑construction planning efforts, including constructability reviews, value engineering, erection sequencing, and crane and rigging planning, to optimize project outcomes before fabrication and erection begin.
Fabrication and Erection Execution, Oversight, and Team Leadership
- Direct and oversee shop fabrication and field erection activities across one or more projects, providing leadership and mentorship to project managers, shop supervisors, erection superintendents, and ironworker crews.
- Directly supervise multiple Project Managers, assigning projects, setting priorities, balancing workloads, and reviewing their schedules, budgets, cost reports, and change orders, as well as conducting performance evaluations.
- Own full accountability for project financial performance, monitoring progress against schedules and budgets, forecasting variances, and driving corrective action at both the project and portfolio level.
- Conduct high‑level shop and site visits and inspections, using findings to coach fabrication and erection teams and refine standard operating procedures across projects.
- Serve as an escalation point for on‑site challenges that exceed the authority of project‑level staff.
Quality Assurance, Standards, and Continuous Improvement
- Set and continuously refine company‑wide quality control standards and procedures for fabrication and erection, including welding, bolting, and coatings, ensuring consistency across project teams and driving a culture of accountability.
- Lead root‑cause analysis of recurring quality issues and drive systemic corrective actions that improve outcomes across the broader project portfolio, not just individual sites.
- Mentor project teams on quality control best practices and build institutional knowledge that scales beyond any single project.
Executive Stakeholder Communication and Relationship Management
- Function as the senior point of contact and trust advisors for high‑value clients, general contractors, owners, architects, structural engineers, and executive‑level stakeholders.
- Lead strategic communication on project status, risk, and financial performance to senior leadership and clients, translating technical details into business impact.
- Own and facilitate high‑stakes project meetings, owner/architect/contractor (OAC) meetings, and executive briefings, driving alignment and decision‑making among diverse stakeholder groups.
- Build and maintain long‑term client relationships that support repeat business and organizational reputation.
Risk Management, Issue Resolution, and Organizational Impact
- Proactively identify enterprise‑level risks across the project portfolio and develop comprehensive mitigation and contingency strategies.
- Lead resolution of complex, high‑stakes disputes, claims, change orders, and back‑charges, exercising sound judgment and negotiation skills to protect company interests and project outcomes.
- Drive lessons‑learned processes and embed process improvements into company standards, elevating risk management maturity across the organization.
- Mentor and develop junior project managers in risk identification and issue resolution, building bench strength for the organization.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or related field preferred, or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in project management, estimating/preconstruction, with a proven track record of successfully leading large‑scale structural steel fabrication and erection projects.
- Expertise in structural steel fabrication and erection practices, with a strong understanding of AISC and AWS standards, erection sequencing, crane and rigging operations, and OSHA steel erection safety requirements (Subpart R).
- Demonstrated leadership abilities, with a track record of effectively leading cross‑functional teams, supervising multiple Project Managers, and delivering results in a fast‑paced environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and collaborate effectively with clients, internal teams, and external stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to anticipate issues, identify solutions, and make informed decisions.
- Proficiency in Project Management tools and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
