Job summary

Great American Insurance Group is seeking an experienced Underwriter for the Excess Liability team. The role focuses on Lead Umbrella and Excess Liability accounts across manufacturing, contracting, retail services, and distribution, supporting nationwide accounts with a mix of on-site and remote work.

The position emphasizes disciplined underwriting, strong production, and long-term relationship management.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience is required.
• 6-10 years of casualty underwriting experience.
• Prior Excess Liability and Commercial Umbrella underwriting experience preferred.
• Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills are essential.
• Progress toward or completion of a professional insurance designation is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead underwriting of new and renewal Excess and Umbrella business per guidelines and profitability goals.
• Analyze complex risk exposures to determine coverage, pricing, and terms.
• Evaluate and manage complex renewals, endorsements and policy changes.
• Obtain and assess supplemental underwriting information (loss histories, Safer-SMS, inspections, third-party data).
• Ensure documentation of underwriting decisions and regulatory compliance.
• Build and maintain partnerships with agents, brokers, claims, and internal teams to support decisions.
• Communicate underwriting strategies and risk considerations to internal and external stakeholders.
• Maintain relationships to generate new business while retaining profitable accounts.
• Promote Excess and Umbrella products to drive growth and service.
• Lead marketing initiatives with broker/agent meetings and industry events.
• Analyze market/regulatory trends to identify opportunities and enhancements.
• Review underwriting/marketing practices and implement improvements.

We are seeking an experienced underwriter to join our Excess Liability team. This role focuses on underwriting Lead Umbrella and Excess Liability accounts across manufacturing, contracting, retail services, and distribution. The position supports a nationwide producer base and targets Middle Market through National commercial accounts, balancing disciplined underwriting with strong production and relationship management.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

• Lead the underwriting of new and renewal Excess and Umbrella business in alignment with company guidelines, risk appetite, and profitability goals.
• Analyze complex risk exposures to determine appropriate coverage, pricing, structure, and terms.
• Evaluate and manage complex renewals, endorsements, and policy modifications, identifying opportunities for coverage enhancements and risk mitigation.
• Procure and assess supplemental underwriting information, including loss histories, Safer-SMS reports, external inspections, and other third-party data.
• Ensure accurate documentation of underwriting decisions and compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations.
• Build and maintain strong partnerships with agents, brokers, claims, and internal stakeholders to support informed underwriting decisions and long-term account success.
• Clearly communicate underwriting strategies, decisions, and risk considerations to internal teams and external partners.
• Maintain strong business relationships focused on generating new business while retaining profitable accounts.
• Actively promote and explain Excess and Umbrella products and services to drive profitable growth.
• Lead and participate in marketing initiatives, including broker and agent meetings, presentations, and industry events.
• Analyze market conditions, competitive trends, and regulatory developments to identify strategic opportunities and recommend product or marketing enhancements.
• Evaluate underwriting and marketing practices and implement strategic adjustments to improve outcomes and effectiveness.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
• Generally, 6-10 years of casualty experience in Underwriting.
• Prior Excess Liability and Commercial Umbrella underwriting experience strongly preferred.
• Progress toward or completion of a professional insurance designation preferred.Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills with the ability to effectively market products and services.
• Willingness to travel, including overnight travel (more than 10% and less than 50%), to visit agents and brokers.
