Job summary

Garmin is seeking a Senior Product Designer for its U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area.

You will lead design direction across multiple projects, mentor junior designers, and advocate for user-centered design to deliver exceptional product experiences. Collaborate with product, engineering, and marketing teams to shape feature vision, develop design patterns for the Web Design System, and communicate insights through mockups, stories, and documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 5 years relevant work experience OR 9 years equivalent education/experience
• GPA 3.0 or higher (as a general rule) and ability to apply learned knowledge
• Proficient in UX tools such as Figma and Sketch, plus interactive prototyping tools
• Proven track record leading design direction for multiple projects and ensuring timely completion
• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Senior Product Designer at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for being a proven designer with expertise in all aspects of user centered design to produce and give direction to others for the best design solutions.

Essential Functions

• Perform as a design leader who guides design direction for multiple projects and takes responsibility for project planning to ensure timely project completion
• Make substantial contributions to determining feasibility of project goals/objectives
• Partner with team leads/management to determine feature vision, visualize and communicate it
• Serve as the subject matter expert for a key feature or technology and communicate best practices for user experience for that feature
• Research and provide solutions for problems that span multiple groups or disciplines
• Provide feedback on designs in areas of expertise to team members
• Lead conversations with partners and potential clients with respect to user experience design
• Serve as a mentor to less experienced Product Designers (Product Designer 1 & 2)
• Contribute to advanced design research for new products or markets by identifying research opportunities, creating effective protocols, and formulating solid solutions from research results
• Provide input to product design plans and concept documents
• Demonstrate understanding of business needs as they related to design
• Independently determine general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
• Stay up to date with the latest design trends, tools, and technologies and advocate for user-centric design principles and best practices
• Communicate status of work clearly and provide visibility to supervisor
• Exemplifies Garmin’s Mission Statement and Quality Policy and proactively works to improve Garmin’s image and culture

CREATIVE TEAM:

• Design and deliver user experiences for Garmin’s online properties efficiently and effectively
• Communicate research and design ideas through mockups, storyboards, presentations, and documentation
• Develop creative, user-friendly, and globally consistent design patterns and guidelines for the Web Design System
• Partner with design leadership, marketing, IT, global teams, and stakeholders to shape design direction
• Collaborate across product design, development, and management teams to create high-quality solutions

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Interactive Design, Human Factors, Visual Design or a degree with an equivalent curriculum that teaches user centered design principles AND a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience OR a minimum of 9 years equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
• Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) with the ability to effectively apply learned knowledge
• Proficient in UX software tools such as Figma and Sketch, as well as interactive prototyping tools
• Proven track record with leading design direction for multiple projects, and ensuring effective project planning leads to timely completion of project goals/objectives
• Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Desired Qualifications

• Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
• Excellent knowledge and passion for Garmin Products

CREATIVE TEAM:

• Highly detail-oriented to document web components and ensure consistency across all web products

GARMIN LABS:

• Experience with Unity and/or other 2D/3D platforms for interactive design and production
• Experience designing interactive content and interfaces specifically for sports
• Experience working closely with Technical Artists and/or Developers
• Ability to provide examples of overcoming technical limitations and constraints in novel ways
• Proven lead designer for at least one shipped product
