Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking an experienced engineer to lead process engineering for various projects in the oil and gas sector. This hybrid position involves in-office collaboration, with a focus on project design and technical guidance.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Lead process engineering and/or provide senior technical advice for multiple projects within a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Develop heat and material balances for new projects using process simulation tools.
  • Create process flow diagrams (PFD) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Perform equipment sizing calculations and prepare equipment data sheets.
  • Conduct detailed hydraulic calculations to determine pipe sizes, control valve sizing, compressor and pump duties, etc.
  • Carry out facility overpressure protection calculations, PSV sizing, and documentation.
  • Lead and/or participate in safety reviews, HAZOP/PHAs, and PSM activities.
  • Develop Design Basis documents for new projects.
  • Create Process Control Narrative documents and support Cause & Effect documentation.
  • Maintain effective communication with project team members, clients, vendors, and contractors.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced designers and engineers (non‑supervisory role).
  • Participate in proposal preparation for engineering services and support schedule planning, coordinating staffing resources with the Process Engineering Manager.
  • Perform feasibility/economic studies, conceptual designs, front‑end design (FEL), and optimization/de‑bottlenecking studies.
  • Support construction, commissioning, and startup efforts, draft operating procedures, and contribute to operator training manuals.
  • Provide technical guidance and information to mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, civil, and project engineering disciplines.
Work Arrangement

This position is based on a hybrid work schedule and will require in‑office work 3 days per week.

Qualifications
  • BS and/or MS in engineering from an ABET‑approved program with a strong academic background.
  • 6+ years of oil and gas industry experience in midstream and/or upstream.
  • Professional Engineering License is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of gas plants and gas processing preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and a professional demeanor.
  • Excellent team‑working skills.
  • Proficiency in HYSYS, Synergi, VMG Symmetry, and/or ProMax preferred.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% for client meetings, site visits, startup activities, and industry events.
  • Skills in pipeline hydraulic modeling, including dynamic surge analysis.

AI & Automation
  • Expected to lead self‑service propelling teams using data, automation, and AI to improve workflows and deliver cost‑effective designs.
  • Oversee automation and process‑improvement initiatives, such as automating calculations, summarizing technical documents, and generating design documentation.
  • Support engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs.
  • Valued experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields is optional but desirable.

$84,762 - $129,498
