Job summary

Missouri Department of Corrections is seeking a lead corrections professional to supervise offender housing units, coordinate activities, and train staff in Community Supervision Centers and Release Centers. You will guide shift operations and ensure adherence to facility rules while promoting rehabilitation and safety.

You will handle counts, safety inspections, data entry in booking systems, and collaborate with Probation and Parole officers to support offender transition and community safety.

Qualifications

  • Experience as Probation and Parole Assistant or Correctional Officer in a Missouri Department of Corrections setting.
  • High school diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license are required; alternate substitution allowed with more years of work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead worker responsibilities: supervise offenders, train staff, and oversee housing units and activity areas.
  • Conduct counts, inspect housing units for safety, and prepare reports of violations and incidents.
  • Access NCIC/MULES and other databases; respond to warrants and coordinate with Parole Officers.
  • Monitor electronic monitoring, schedule changes, and transports; document data in the Booking and Tracking System.
  • Assist with court hearings and hiring decisions; discuss offender issues with supervisors and staff.

  • Serves as a lead worker of the facility; assigns/trains/evaluates staff supervising offenders in housing units/ living quarters/general housekeeping/work/educational/recreational/religious/treatment activities in Community Supervision Centers and Community Release Centers and serves as shift leader/assistant/relief shift supervisor
  • Participates in periodic counts of offenders; inspects housing units for safety and security violations; checks for health and safety hazards; prepares reports; maintains records on offender violations/ behaviors/mechanical deficiencies/security breaches of facility rules; interviews offenders to obtain information relating to their residential and family relationships/ employment/ educational records/contacts family members/employers/friends to verify offender's background; collects/verifies offender's legal case history and police reports; prepares reports; maintains records of investigative findings
  • Retrieves information from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES), Missouri Department of Revenue, and Missouri Department of Corrections' computer databases; responds to confirmed active warrants; enters/cancels warrants on escaped and/or absconded offenders; participates in the classification/ treatment/supervision of offenders; communicates with Parole Officers and administration regarding referrals and supervision strategies; provides after-hours assistance to departmental staff/the general public
  • Ensures offenders have parole orders; investigates/monitors/enters schedule changes for offenders on electronic monitoring; answers and logs emergency calls from offenders/family members/the general public; contacts appropriate staff to resolve issues; assists in the assignment of offenders to various institutional and residential programs; enters appropriate data into the Department's Booking and Tracking System; assists offenders with job search activities; transports offenders to their designated locations; monitors/controls/documents offender's consumption of prescription and over-the-counter medications; Supervises visits with offenders; searches visitors/offenders/property/living quarters/buildings/grounds for contraband
  • Assists Probation and Parole Officers with court hearings and home visits; provides information to staff/ law enforcement officials relating to location and apprehension of escaped and/or absconded offenders; participates in interview panels and makes hiring recommendations
  • Maintains computer databases/chronological shift records/inventory/vehicle logs/troubleshoots equipment problems; orders/maintains/issues supplies
  • Discusses minor adjustment problems with offenders; refers major problems to the supervisor; promotes rehabilitation by modifying offender attitudes/discouraging undesirable behaviors/encouraging constructive activities; interprets facilities' rules and regulations to offenders; administers substance abuse assessment devices to offenders; collects Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid (DNA) samples; oversees movement/ location of offenders inside and outside of the facility; intervenes in emergency situations to gain control of offenders and/or perform CPR Exercises independence in the performance of duties; receives general administrative direction; work is reviewed by a designated supervisor for conformance with established policies and procedures; performs other related work as assigned
  • Ability to pass a background investigation administered by the Missouri Department of Corrections
  • By assignment, a position may require:
  • Successful completion of safety training which may include firearms and defensive tactics, CPR, First Aid, and the ability to re-qualify annual
  • Successful completion of training administered by the Missouri State Highway Patrol in the Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES) prior to regular appointment
Minimum Qualifications
  • One or more years of experience as a Probation and Parole Assistant or Correctional Officer with the Missouri Department of Corrections; AND possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency, AND a valid vehicle operator’s license OR
  • Three or more years of work experience; AND possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency, AND a valid vehicle operator’s license

(Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience at a rate of 30 earned credit hours for one year)

Contingent upon your position, you may also be eligible to receive:

  • A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
  • A $0.75 per hour medium security or $1.50 maximum security differential if you work full-time at a qualifying facility.
  • A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing differential if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.

The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years! If you are transferring from another State of Missouri agency and are receiving state retention pay, please be advised that the Missouri Department of Corrections administers retention based upon your retention anniversary date. As a result, your retention pay upon transfer may differ from what you were receiving at your previous agency until you reach your applicable retention anniversary date.
