Job summary

Confluent seeks a Senior Principal Engineer to shape the Next-Generation Kafka Background Plane. You will lead architecture across cloud storage, consensus layers, and site reliability, mentoring staff and aligning executives on mission-critical plans.

You will drive high-ambiguity initiatives spanning distributed systems, data integrity, and scalable infrastructure to enable zero-downtime, massive-scale streaming for thousands of enterprise customers.

Qualifications

Distributed systems mastery with large-scale deployment experience.
Deep knowledge of storage engines, log stores, streaming, replication, or consensus.
Ability to translate business goals into multi-year architectural roadmaps.

Responsibilities

Architect multi-year strategy for the Background Plane and align with product objectives.
Design and optimize core platform capabilities including scheduling and coordination.
Ensure end-to-end correctness for data and metadata workflows under concurrency.
Scale to high partition counts, throughput, and sub-millisecond latency.
Drive cross-organizational architectural consensus and governance.
Raise operational excellence with fault tolerance, chaos testing, and observability.
Serve as the technical authority in architectural reviews and incident responses.
Mentor senior engineers and represent the technical vision externally.
