Job summary

Layton Construction in Sandy, UT is seeking a Senior Preconstruction Manager for mission critical projects. You will supervise estimating, planning support, and business development, driving cost analysis, pricing strategies, and bid management for large-scale initiatives.

You will collaborate with executives, clients, and engineers to ensure integrity, safety and quality across complex builds, with a leadership focus on team development and project delivery excellence.

Qualifications

  • Experience leading large projects ($500M+), ideally in mission critical healthcare or industrial sectors.
  • Experience managing preconstruction teams and coordinating with Estimating and Planning.
  • Ability to read and interpret general business publications, journals, procedures, and regulations.
  • Proficient at writing reports and presenting to groups of managers, clients, and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead pre-construction activities for the SBU and deliver predictable outcomes for internal and external teams.
  • Provide leadership for estimating and planning support personnel and ensure accurate cost modeling and estimating.
  • Oversee budgeting, buy-out processes and ensure reliable information for estimates.
  • Coordinate with marketing and client relations to address issues and opportunities.
  • Direct training for estimators, planning staff, and project engineers and ensure accountability for team performance.

Job Description

Summary
The Senior Pre-Construction Manager has primary responsibility for the SBU’s pre-construction activities.

Duties

  • Champions “The Layton Way” by delivering predictable outcomes for internal teams, external teams, and customers.
  • Ensures that “Constructing with Integrity” is delivered by working with honesty, unity, safety, and quality of work.
  • Provide leadership for estimating and planning support personnel.
  • Monitor project budgeting and buy-out processes to ensure reliable information is available for estimates.
  • Facilitate communication of cost history to ensure on-going evaluation of pricing information for better cost modeling and estimating.
  • Monitor planning support processes to ensure efficient and effective use of resources.
  • Interface with marketing to ensure consideration of all relevant information, issues, and brand name recognition.
  • Assist in the evaluation, planning and execution of new scope of services and profit centers.
  • Monitor productivity and cost control on SBU projects.
  • Attend project review meetings and facilitate solutions to budget problems as required.
  • Plan and implement training for SBU estimators, planning support and project engineers.
  • Identify and procure profitable projects by overseeing all business development activities, including customer relationships, networking, performing public relations activities, maintaining client database and executing the client matrices.
  • Oversee all sales activities, including identifying and pre-qualifying leads, working on procurement strategies, developing proposals, responding to RFQ’s, SOQ’s and RFP’s.
  • Establish goals, procedures, systems and tools used to accomplish sales/marketing tasks for the SBU.
  • Commit the company in the project procurement process with respect to SBU projects.
  • Participate actively in team environment and contribute to successful completion of team goals.
  • This position supervises Estimating and Business Development activities and personnel and thus accepts accountability for both individual and team performance.
  • Employee will work with the Business Unit Executives, Estimating and Planning Support Personnel, and clients.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • BS in Construction Management, Marketing and/or Communication or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience leading large projects ($500M+), ideally in the mission critical, healthcare, or industrial sectors
  • 15+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience managing preconstruction teams
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and/or the general public.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Prioritize, organize and delegate assignments.
  • Knowledge of estimating software preferred.
