Job summary

McKinstry is seeking a Senior Preconstruction Engineer to lead early-stage cost estimation and budget control for New Construction Mechanical projects in the United States. You will support design, manage budgets, and partner with Project Managers to ensure smooth transitions from preconstruction to construction.

The role requires experience in engineering or construction, strong estimating capability, and proficiency with MS Office and scheduling tools.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Engineering or equivalent work experience.
• 3 to 7 years of experience in engineering, project management, or construction.
• Experience working for a General Contractor or Major Mechanical Subcontractor preferred.
• Basic estimating skills required.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook required.
• PE, CPM, LEED designations are preferred, but not required.
• Understanding of accounting and financial management preferred.
• Scheduling software: Microsoft Project, Primavera and/or SureTrak preferred.
• Completed OSHA 10 or 30 class is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Preconstruction Management: own conceptual estimates, manage scope/budgets before construction begins, support design phase management and risk assessment.
• Project Controls: track projects, manage pricing input, write clear scope letters, review contracts and ensure timely reporting.
• Team Management: coach and mentor team members, establish project meetings, plan staffing, uphold McKinstry culture.

The Opportunity with McKinstry

We are currently seeking aSeniorPreconstruction Engineerto join the team as a member of our New Construction Mechanical Department.Some responsibilities you will have include:

Preconstruction Management

• Projects can range from conceptual to detailed.Must be proficient in conceptual estimating large mechanical systems fromvery basicnarratives / architectural plans as well as experience in supporting quantity take-off estimates.
• Own conceptual estimates for new construction (mechanical)
• Fully support management of scope and budget on assigned projects before the project beginsconstructionphase.
• During design and estimating phase for project; support design phase management,supportbudget management,manage risk and opportunities for budget.
• Manage job from early design through construction and permitting.
• Partner with Project Managers ensure perfecttransitionbetween preconstructionand construction
• Protect/enhance gross margin potential on all projects.
• In addition to all preconstruction management activities to the projects assigned toyou,mustsupportsalesteam indevelopmentof conceptual mechanical budgets andscope letters from conceptual/architectural plans.
• Participatefully in department betterment goalsin order tostreamline and enhancequality of deliverables to our clients (internal and external)
• Excellent communication skills with our clientsareparamount forsuccessin thisposition. You are expected to deliver and manage estimates/budgets throughout theduration of the project.
• Take initiative to facilitate own development process in conceptual estimating and overall preconstruction management.Must seek continual feedback and mentorship to develop the knowledgebase for advancing conceptual estimating skillset and preconstruction management skillset.
• Support andparticipatein industry / business development activities. Attendproject interviews, as needed.

Project Controls

• Apply McKinstry best practices and preconstruction processes to each project.
• Mitigate all risks within the preconstruction process so that scope is completelycovered and contingency is employed in areas of risk.
• Utilize McKinstry technology platforms to track projects and keep historical databases/ metrics up to date.
• Work with vendors and subcontractors to ensure pricing input on all projects underyour direction.
• Excellent scope letter and narrative writing abilities to clearly delineate scope of workand toassistour owner/general contractor partners in making sure project scope iscompletely covered.
• Follow McKinstry best practices for estimate reviews on every job.Preconstructionteam will takeleadin scheduling the review at a minimum of one day prior tosubmission.
• Assumefinancial responsibilityfor projects inpreconstructionphase includingaccurate,timelyand relevant reporting to stakeholders.
• Review contracts, drawings,specificationsand other resources to answer questionsin a timely manner.
• Ensure that all material and equipmentispurchasedina timelyand cost-effectivemanner.
• Monitorprogress towards goals toanticipatepotential problems.

Team Management

• Coach and mentor project team members.
• Develop project staffing plans to include labor, subcontractors, etc.
• Act as steward of McKinstry culture.
• Establishand lead project meetings.
• Other duties as assigned.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry

• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Engineeringor equivalent workexperiencerequired.
• Three (3) to seven (7) years of experience in engineering, project management, orconstruction isrequired.
• Experience working for a General Contractor or Major Mechanical Subcontractorpreferred.
• Basic estimating skillsrequired.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlookarerequired.
• PE, CPM, LEED professional designationsarepreferred, but notrequired.

The pay range for this position is $36.48 - $55.77 per hour; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Base pay information is based on market location. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
