Job summary

Frey Consulting Group seeks a Senior Power Systems Engineer to plan, analyze, design, and implement electrical power systems for mission-critical facilities and utility-scale projects in Salt Lake City. You will lead design efforts for HV/MV systems, substations, and BESS integrations.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience with data centers, generator paralleling, and utility interconnections, and will mentor junior staff while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
  • PE license is required or active.
  • 10+ years of experience designing electrical power systems.
  • Extensive experience with medium-voltage power distribution, protection & controls, and power system studies.

Responsibilities

  • Design and coordinate MV/HV electrical power systems for mission-critical facilities.
  • Develop one-line and three-line diagrams, grounding plans, and layouts.
  • Coordinate utility interconnections and substation projects.
  • Mentor junior engineers and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Prepare technical reports, calculations, specs, and construction documents.
  • Perform power system studies and ensure NEC/IEEE/NESC compliance.

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah (Remote available for the right candidate)

Position Summary

The Senior Power Systems Engineer is responsible for the planning, analysis, design, and implementation of complex electrical power systems supporting mission-critical facilities, utility-scale infrastructure, industrial facilities, and large commercial developments. This position specializes in medium- and high-voltage power distribution, power generation, protection and controls, substations, and power system studies.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on (\"doer\") engineer with extensive experience designing and coordinating electrical infrastructure for data centers, utility interconnections, power plants, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), substations, and other mission-critical facilities. The engineer collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams while providing technical leadership throughout all phases of project delivery.

Power Generation & Mission Critical Infrastructure
  • Design electrical infrastructure supporting mission-critical facilities, including hyperscale data centers, industrial facilities, and utility-scale projects.
  • Design medium- and high-voltage power generation systems utilizing reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, renewable energy sources, and hybrid generation systems.
  • Design and coordinate large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including utility-scale installations exceeding 10 MW.
  • Design generator paralleling switchgear, synchronization systems, and associated control systems.
  • Design and specify medium-voltage UPS systems and DC power distribution systems supporting critical facilities.
  • Develop reliable power architectures for continuous-operation facilities requiring high system availability.
Medium-Voltage Power System Design
  • Design low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Develop one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, grounding plans, equipment layouts, cable routing, and power distribution drawings.
  • Specify and coordinate:
    • Medium-voltage switchgear
    • Switchboards
    • DC power equipment
  • Perform service load calculations and equipment sizing in accordance with NEC, IEEE, NESC, utility requirements, and project specifications.
Protection & Controls
  • Develop protection schemes for medium- and high-voltage systems.
  • Design relay protection, relay coordination, and protective device settings.
  • Develop AC/DC control schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Develop PLC and automation control philosophies.
  • Coordinate SCADA integration and utility interconnection requirements.
  • Support commissioning and startup activities.

  • Lead and engineer complex electrical power projects from planning through construction.
  • Prepare engineering reports, calculations, technical specifications, and construction documents.
  • Perform site investigations and existing system evaluations.
  • Shop drawing reviews
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers.
