Johnson Controls, Inc. seeks a Senior Portfolio Manager to lead strategy, roadmap, and launch execution for a category of GDCS products on a global, cross-functional team.

You will influence engineering, operations, supply, sales, marketing, and program management to deliver portfolio outcomes without direct ownership of functions. The role requires strong leadership, deep technical fluency in HVAC/refrigeration, and a track record of successful NPI and capital investment cases in a matrixed

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical discipline.
• 12+ years of progressive experience in product management or technical leadership of engineered physical equipment.
• 5+ years owning multiple product lines with prioritization authority.
• Demonstrated ownership of a multi-year product roadmap that was funded, executed, and delivered measurable commercial results.
• Experience with engineered equipment programs through NPI from concept to volume production, including platform-level programs.
• Track record of authoring and defending capital investment business cases (NPV/IRR) and capacity expansion.
• Deep technical fluency in heat transfer, HVAC, or refrigeration systems.
• Experience working in a global matrix organization with cross-functional outcomes.
• Experience developing product management or engineering professionals.

Senior Portfolio Manager owns the strategy, roadmap, and launch execution for a category of GDCS products.

This is a global, cross-functional portfolio leadership role.

The Senior Portfolio Manager delivers portfolio outcomes through influence across Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, Sales, Marketing, and Program Management rather than direct functional ownership.

Key Responsibilities

Portfolio Strategy and Roadmap

• Own the multi-year roadmap for a category of products, sequencing investment against regional demand growth and evolving regulation.

• Define platform strategy across the portfolio to support configure-to-order delivery at scale.

• Establish clear position among products within the portfolio

• Assess competitors with particular attention to regional specialists and cost-position players.

Commercial and Customer Support

• Partner closely with Sales and regional commercial teams to understand where the portfolio is losing, and why.

• Maintain a live view of product, feature, cost, lead-time, and documentation gaps blocking wins; drive each to closure or an explicit decision not to pursue.

• Conduct structured win/loss analysis, with attention to cost-position and lead-time losses, and feed conclusions into the roadmap.

• Drive specification influence with consulting engineers and design-build partners so GDCS platforms are positioned early in project design.

• Recommend pricing strategy and configuration-level price architecture to Finance and the P&L owners.

• Equip Sales with selection tools, application guidance, and competitive positioning for the portfolio.

Capacity, Capital, and Supply

• Author and defend the demand case and business cases for capacity expansion, recognizing the long lead time between decision and available capacity.

• Supply the demand and product assumptions underpinning capex prioritization, working closely with the Director, Portfolio CAPEX.

• Partner with Supply Chain and Operations on regional footprint strategy, recognizing that freight and logistics economics materially shape competitiveness in large, fabricated equipment.

• Recommend make-versus-buy and regional sourcing positions for major components.

New Product Introduction and Launch

• Ensure every product line has a credible NPI plan with defined gates and hold Product Managers accountable to them.

• Represent the portfolio in RCLP launch programs, resolving cross-product conflicts before they escalte.

• Partner with Portfolio Industrialization on manufacturing readiness, test capability, and order flow definition for new product lines.

• Ensure launch material and sales enablement readiness with the Global Product Launch and Sales Enablement Manager.

Team Leadership

• Lead, coach, and develop a team of Product Managers; set expectations, conduct reviews, and build succession depth.

• Build team capability in hardware product management fundamentals — cost engineering, supply chain economics, NPI discipline, and technical judgment under ambiguity.

• Set clear autonomy and responsiveness expectations so Product Managers operate independently within defined decision boundaries.

• Define and staff the portfolio's target structure, including justification for new roles as the portfolio expands.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.

• 12+ years of progressive experience in product management, product engineering, or technical commercial leadership of engineered physical equipment.

• 5+ years owning multiple product lines simultaneously, with demonstrated authority over tradeoffs and prioritization across them.

• Demonstrated ownership of a multi-year product roadmap that was funded, executed, and delivered measurable commercial results.

• Multiple engineered equipment programs taken through full NPI from concept to volume production, including at least one platform-level or architecture-defining program.

• Track record of authoring and successfully defending capital investment business cases at executive level, including NPV/IRR-based justification and capacity expansion justification for fabricated equipment.

• Deep technical fluency in heat transfer, HVAC, or refrigeration systems — sufficient to challenge engineering assumptions independently and hold credibility with consulting engineers and customer executives.

• Demonstrated success driving cross-functional outcomes in a global matrixed organization without direct authority over the contributing functions.

• Experience formally managing or developing product management or engineering professionals.

• Experience working directly with Sales to diagnose competitive losses and convert findings into product action.

• Global scope experience, including multi-region product responsibility and exposure to regional footprint and freight economics.

• Demonstrated ability to set direction and make defensible decisions under incomplete information and compressed timelines.

Preferred

• Data center market experience, including hyperscale and colocation procurement models.

• Experience with specification influence through consulting engineers and design-build channels.

• Experience leading an engineer-to-order to configure-to-order business model transition.

• Experience scaling manufacturing capacity for large, fabricated equipment across multiple regions.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $130,000.00 – 190,000.00 USD Annual. Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data. This position includes a competitive benefits package.
