Job description

Location: [Remote/On-site/Hybrid], United States - any time zone; core collaboration hours agreed with the team
Department: Software Engineering
Reports To: Build & Release Manager
Type: Full-Time
Level: Senior (individual-contributor platform engineering track)

NevadaNano is a leading Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) company specializing in safety and climate solutions for many of the world’s largest corporations, with innovative multi-gas sensing products and continuous IoT monitoring systems based on our proprietary MPS™ sensor platform. Just as digital cameras and the ability to digitize sound have transformed our ability to see and hear, NevadaNano’s technology platform digitizes and enhances the sense of smell for the Internet of Things.

We are now entering our next phase of growth - scaling our IIoT MethaneTrack™ platform, expanding feature sets, and onboarding enterprise customers - and we are looking for a Senior Platform Engineer for our product infrastructure to augment our Infrastructure as Code (IaC) through Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) development to support that journey.

Position Overview

The Senior Platform Engineer builds, operates, and keeps running the platform beneath MethaneTrack™, NevadaNano’s industrial internet of things (IIoT) Software as a Service (SaaS) platform for the oil and gas industry, so that changes reach production safely and predictably. Most days, the work is owning the CI/CD pipelines and the infrastructure beneath them; when incidents occur, the role provides first-line response and, if needed, routes each issue to the team that owns it. This is a platform role: it builds and operates the tooling and infrastructure the MethaneTrack™ application depends on, rather than developing the application itself. The platform currently runs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and will be expanded to other cloud providers.

Key Responsibilities

Platform Infrastructure Development

  • Develop and maintain the platform’s IaC (Terraform) as the platform grows
  • Develop and maintain Kubernetes manifest templates (Helm Charts) for the platform’s shared services, MethaneTrack™, and future applications
  • Hold the platform’s configuration, policy, and pipeline definitions as version-controlled code, promoted through the same reviewed path as application changes
  • Evaluate and standardize platform tooling to reduce operational complexity, working to the architecture and adoption decisions set by the seat this role reports to

CI/CD and release engineering

  • Design, build, and maintain the CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Argo CD) that take a change from commit to production
  • Own build, release, deployment, and rollback procedures
  • Automate manual pipeline steps; every step removed is a step that can no longer fail silently
  • Execute production deployments to the agreed release plan, and provide the pipeline status, deployment history, and rollback options that release decisions depend on
  • Integrate the automated test suites as pipeline gates, and surface results and failures back to the team that owns them
  • Apply AI-assisted tooling in the pipeline and in operations - failure summaries, runbook generation, and incident documentation - with human review before anything reaches production
  • Own the artifact repositories that builds, images, and test results persist to (storage, retention, integrity, and access)

Developer experience

  • Maintain reusable deployment templates and documented platform standards, so a new service reaches production on a paved path rather than a bespoke one
  • Reduce the time it takes an engineer to get a working environment and a first change deployed

Platform runtime operations

  • Operate the Kubernetes clusters and associated workloads (MethaneTrack™ runtime, PostgreSQL, Kafka, etc.)
  • Automate secret and certificate rotation, and manage access control, for deployment tooling and cloud environments
  • Automate backup and restore, and prove them by testing the restores on a schedule
  • Keep development, test, staging, and production in parity by building each environment from the same configuration
  • Automate the path for cluster, operating system, and dependency updates, so security patches ship on time

Monitoring and observability

  • Build and maintain platform monitoring, dashboards, and alerting (Prometheus, Grafana, or similar)
  • Cover logs, distributed traces, capacity trends, and cloud cost, not only system metrics
  • Tune alerting so issues are found before customers report them
  • Measure and report the platform’s delivery and reliability numbers - deployment frequency, lead time for a change, time to detect, time to restore, change failure rate - and use them to choose the next thing to fix
  • Operate the platform to its stated service-level objectives, and remove the recurring manual work behind them

Incident response and first-line triage

  • Respond to platform incidents and participate in an on-call rotation as the team grows
  • Triage incoming issues before fixing them or routing to the team that owns it
  • Support contractual security-incident notification commitments: detect, triage, and document within the required window
  • Run a post-incident review after each significant incident, capture actionable lessons learned, and drive the systemic fixes that prevent a repeat

Pipeline security and compliance

  • Implement security scanning and vulnerability checks as pipeline gates, to the Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) standards of the company
  • Automate supply-chain checks in the pipeline: dependency and image scanning, image signing, and a recorded software bill of materials for each release
  • Take every infrastructure, pipeline, and configuration change through the reviewed promotion path, approved by someone other than its author
  • Build and administer the promotion gates and the access separation behind them, so the gates cannot be bypassed and no one can approve their own change
  • Keep deployment history auditable and produce audit evidence - access reviews, change records, deployment logs - for SOC 2 and customer compliance requirements
How This Role Works with Others

The Platform Engineer builds and operates the platform (product infrastructure) layer and coordinates closely with the roles that own the processes running on it:

  • Product Manager - owns release planning, coordination, and release notes. The Platform Engineer executes deployments according to the Release Plan and supplies pipeline status, deployment history, and rollback options.
  • QA Manager - owns the development, analysis, and governance of automated tests. The Platform Engineer operates the test runners, environments, and pipeline stages they execute in, and the storage their results persist to.
  • The seat this role reports to - owns platform design, strategy, and compliance governance, supervises this role, and reviews and approves its changes before they reach production. The Platform Engineer implements the resulting standards - branching strategy, security gates, compliance controls - in tooling and infrastructure.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • 7+ years in platform engineering, DevOps, or site reliability engineering (SRE) roles
  • Hands-on production experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, and a GitOps continuous-delivery tool (Argo CD or similar)
  • CI/CD pipeline ownership (Jenkins or similar)
  • Version control administration (Git) and artifact or container registry management
  • Monitoring and observability tooling in production (Prometheus, Grafana, or similar)
  • Production experience on at least one major cloud platform (OCI, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP)); OCI experience is a strong plus
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (Python, Bash, or similar)
  • Containers and container images (Docker or similar), Linux administration, networking fundamentals (DNS, TLS), and declarative configuration (YAML)
  • Experience operating under SOC 2 or similar customer security and compliance requirements: access reviews, audit evidence, system hardening
  • Experience working under an audited change-management process: peer review and approval before promotion, with no self-approval
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with industrial internet of things (IIoT) systems (e.g., LoRaWAN)
  • Kafka and production PostgreSQL administration
  • Enterprise identity federation (OpenID Connect, SAML) and single sign-on integration
Why Join Us?
  • Own the Platform: Be the driving force behind the CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure that keeps a green-technology IIoT product running for customers in the field.
  • Growth Opportunities: Shape platform practices from the ground up as NevadaNano scales into its next growth phase, with real room to grow into more senior infrastructure leadership.
  • Collaborative, Distributed Team: Work with a supportive engineering team spread across time zones that values ownership, automation, and clear communication over rigid processes.
