Role Overview

The Linux Engineering team owns the Linux platform supporting the majority of the firm’s compute environment. This is a highly hands-on infrastructure engineering role focused on operating and evolving a large Linux fleet across private data centers and cloud environments.

As a Senior Platform Engineer – Linux, you will own significant portions of the Linux platform, from provisioning and configuration through performance optimization, security, monitoring, and lifecycle management. The role is particularly focused on systems performance and latency optimization for demanding quantitative and trading workloads, as well as building automation that enables thousands of systems to operate as a consistent, code-defined platform.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer, automate, and operate a large-scale Linux fleet across private data centers and cloud environments, maintaining high standards for reliability, performance, security, and availability.
  • Perform advanced Linux kernel and system-level performance tuning for latency-sensitive workloads, including CPU core pinning and shielding, kernel bypass, network stack optimization, interrupt steering, and related low-latency techniques.
  • Design and maintain automation for Linux provisioning, deployment, configuration, patching, monitoring, and lifecycle management using Python and modern configuration-management practices.
  • Manage and support enterprise Linux environments across Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Ubuntu, from initial provisioning through production operations and lifecycle management.
  • Treat infrastructure as code by developing repeatable, scalable, and automated approaches to Linux fleet management rather than relying on manually managed systems.
  • Define and implement Linux security baselines and hardening standards in partnership with Security Engineering, including patching, privileged access, identity, and credential-management practices.
  • Monitor and improve the reliability, performance, observability, and operational efficiency of the Linux platform.
  • Partner with Data Center and Fleet Infrastructure teams on provisioning, hardware lifecycle, asset management, and bare-metal infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with Developer Tools and Infrastructure teams to integrate Linux platforms with build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and developer workflows.
  • Contribute to Linux platform architecture and technical strategy, helping establish consistent standards and engineering practices across the environment.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues across the Linux operating system, compute, networking, and infrastructure layers.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and provide hands-on production support for the Linux platform.
  • Mentor engineers on Linux internals, system performance, infrastructure automation, and operational best practices.
  • Continuously evaluate new technologies and approaches to improve platform performance, scalability, reliability, and developer productivity.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in Linux systems engineering, platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Deep hands-on expertise with Linux operating systems and strong understanding of Linux internals and kernel behavior.
  • Advanced experience with Linux performance optimization, including CPU/core pinning and shielding, interrupt steering, network stack tuning, kernel bypass, or similar low-latency techniques.
  • Strong experience administering and engineering both Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu environments.
  • Strong Python development and scripting skills for infrastructure automation.
  • Experience with configuration-management and infrastructure automation tools such as Ansible or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience automating Linux provisioning, configuration, patching, monitoring, and lifecycle management at scale.
  • Experience implementing Linux security baselines, system hardening, and configuration standards, including familiarity with frameworks such as CIS Benchmarks or STIGs.
  • Experience supporting distributed systems and/or cloud infrastructure.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across operating systems, compute, networking, and infrastructure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering and business teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with general-purpose programming languages such as C++, Java, or Rust.
  • Experience building or operating bare-metal provisioning platforms, metal-as-a-service environments, or Kubernetes-based bare-metal infrastructure.
  • Experience tuning Linux systems for low-latency, high-performance, quantitative, or trading workloads.
  • Experience working directly with quantitative developers, researchers, or trading technology teams within a financial services environment.
  • Experience with large-scale infrastructure automation and fleet-management platforms.
  • Familiarity with modern AI-assisted and agentic developer productivity tooling, including MCP servers, spec-driven development, Claude Code, sub-agents, skills, and automated engineering workflows.
  • Experience working in complex, matrixed organizations and leading cross-functional or cross-business infrastructure initiatives.
  • Contributions to relevant open-source projects.
  • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity, strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a continuous-improvement mindset.
